Originally chartered in Illinois in 1847 as the Rock Island and LaSalle Railroad Company, the road was renamed Chicago and Rock Island Railroad Company in 1851, the Chicago, Rock Island, and Pacific Railroad Company in 1866, and the Chicago, Rock Island, and Pacific Railway Company in 1880. In Texas, three main Rock Island routes crossed the state through Fort Worth, Dallas, Houston, Galveston, Dalhart, Memphis, and Amarillo.
Railroad founded in 1847 as the Rock Island and LaSalle Rail Road Company, reorganized several times including in 1866 under the name Chicago, Rock Island, and Pacific Railroad Company and 1880 under the name Chicago, Rock Island, and Pacific Railway Company; of Chicago, Ill.
Details: By January 1883, the company had extended a line almost up to the southern boundary of Kansas. Between the years of 1885 and 1888, the Chicago, Kansas and Nebraska Railway Company built most of the track that was owned by the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railway Company. The Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railway Company was prosperous from 1923 thru 1929. However, for the period of 1931 thru 1935, the system was weakened financially as a result of both the economic depression and the repeated crop failures occurring in its service area.

Railroads history collection, circa 1870-1930.
Title:
Railroads history collection, circa 1870-1930.
The railroads history collection is an assembled collection of business records and histories from and about a variety of railroads operating in Kansas. The collection documents general railroad history throughout the state. It consists of records that were compiled by railroad collectors or donated separately, and do not fit with existing railroad collections such as the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway Company records. The majority of the collection consists of Thomas M. Lillard's collection of Union Pacific Railroad manuscripts including correspondence, railroad schedules, quarterly reports, receipts, ledgers, oil leases, bank books, records on the floods of 1903-1904, volumes entitled "West Traffic," and testimonies from litigation that Union Pacific was involved in. Other records concern such railroads as Chicago, Rock Island, and Pacific papers on East Side Street Railway Company; Scott City Northern Railroad Company; Colorado, Kansas, and Oklahoma Railroad; the Missouri, Kansas, and Texas or Katy Railroad; the Union Pacific and Kansas Pacific; and the Topeka and North Western Railroad.

Angel, Jim. Railroading.
Title:
Railroading. 1996.
Angel recounts his experiences working for the railroads as a steam locomotive fireman based in Mason City, Iowa. At the end of the 1930s and into the 1940s five railroad companies and an interurban electric line ran trains through Mason City, fueling the author's boyhood passion for railroads. One tale of particular historical note relates how Mexicans along the tracks would climb aboard the moving trains in order to steal coal to heat their homes.

Title:
Leavenworth Depot and Railroad Company collection, 1885-1959 bulk (1900-1925).
This collection includes a variety of materials. There are minutes of stockholder and board of directors meetings which give information about the election of directors, company officers, general policies, and salary changes. This material also includes calls for meetings and proxies for those directors who were not able to attend the meetings. Most of the information about this company is found in the correspondence files of the depot superintendent and company officials. Topics discussed include payments to retire the company's debt, personnel problems, accident and damage claims against the depot company, and correspondence with the United States Railroad Administration during World War One. Also in these files are letters about a lengthy controversy between the depot company and the Chicago and Great Western Railroad Company about its failure to pay its bills assessed by the depot company. Several letters show the procedure for investigating and settling claims regarding accidents and damages. There are letters for health officials recommending changes when threatened with a typhoid epidemic. Other correspondence illustrate the day to day problems of depot operations such as requests for passes, selection of paper drinking cups, handling rail from the trains, installing coin operated stalls in the restrooms, bonding employees, and purchasing insurance covering depot property and operations. The general files also include correspondence with federal (ICC) and various state regulatory and taxing agencies. There is some correspondence relating to depot maintenance and to the activities of the ticket agent. There are leases and contracts for depot concessions or repair or remodeling work required at the depot.

Title:
Jules A. Bourquin photographs 1898-1957
Jules A. Bourquin was born in St. Emir, Switzerland and immigrated with his family to Horton, Kansas where he became an optometrist working out of his father’s jewelry store. For the next 62 years Bourquin photographed the town and surrounding areas making more than 21,000 exposures from 1898 to 1959. Subjects photographed range from the local town parades, circuses, Indians, and train wrecks to the U.S. military and infantry divisions. Most photographs relate to the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad. Some of his images detail the labor-intensive work that railroads demanded illustrated in Horton machine shop interiors. The Jules Alfred Bourquin photograph collection (1898-1957) consists of approximately 1,742 prints and 626 negatives (385 film negatives, 227 glass plate negatives, 14 glass lantern slides). Prints sizes range from 2.5 x 4.5 inches to 16 x 20 inches. There are real photographic postcards, mounted images, and at least three unbound and oversize albums.
