Included, too, are a copy of the will of William Smith, ca. 1800, and a diagram of Count Rumford's Improved Chimney Fireplace, n.d.

Dechert, Robert, 1895-1975. Family papers, 1798-1975.

Title: Family papers, 1798-1975.

The papers of Robert Dechert make up the bulk of the collection and touch upon almost all of his activities as a student, teacher, lawyer, politician, and civic leader. There is less material for his law firms. The material includes: biographical information, 1916-1975; University of Pennsylvania notebooks and examination papers, 1918-1919; military service papers, 1918-1919; diaries, letters, orders, maps, and memorabilia covering his service in France, 1918-1919; tests for his students, [1923-1942]; a notebook pertaining to Schnader for Governor (of Pennsylvania), 1934; speeches, [1930-1960]; Defense Department reports; correspondence; certificates and citations of award and honor; photographs throughout his career including one each with Richard Nixon and with Dwight Eisenhower; clippings; and genealogical material for the Dechert and Porter families. The Henry Taylor Dechert papers are limited to two items: an equestrian photograph and a letterpress copybook, 1901-1904, largely concerning his duties with the Pennsylvania National Guard. The papers for Henry Martyn Dechert include biographical information and the minute book for the West Philadelphia Home Guard, 1861-1862 which gives a narrative of a local march and encampment. The Robert Porter Dechert papers are limited to his diary kept during the campaigns in Georgia; commissions for the Pennsylvania Volunteers, First City Troop, and the Pennsylvania National Guard signed by Governor Andrew Gregg Curtin, Governor Hartranft, and Governor Pattison; photographs; and scrapbooks, 1869-1886, that deal with local political issues in Philadelphia. Andrew Porter is also represented by a small group of papers, 1798-1806.

William W. Porter collection

Title: William W. Porter collection

This collection contains the papers of several members of a Pennsylvania family, distinguished in the Revolutionary War, political leadership, jurisprudence, and administrative affairs. Andrew Porter papers, 1773-1813, deal chiefly with land transactions in which he was officially and personally interested, in Allegheny, Mercer, Northumberland, Westmoreland and other Pennsylvania counties. Included are several items on his military career, 1776, 1778; his astronomical observation, 1786-1787; the Pennsylvania western boundary line, 1784-1786. The correspondence, 1829-1867, of David R. Porter, governor of Pennsylvania, 1839-1845, includes: letters, 1838-1867, of James Buchanan; letters of Sam Houston, 1858; copy of an address to John C. Calhoun; and other items on state and national political affairs. There are also papers of George B. Porter, Robert Porter, James Madison Porter, and other members of the Porter family, 1770-1880.
