Chiefly correspondence exchanged between members of the Grigsby and related Chandler and Porter families of Rockbridge County, Va. Correspondents include Reuben Grigsby (1780-1863) of "Hickory Hill"; Abner Joseph Grigsby (1821-1851) while attending the University of Virginia and Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia, Pa.; George Hugh Blair Grigsby (1823-1855) while in Texas, Louisiana, and Virginia (concerning in part the education of children); Hugh Blair Grigsby (1806-1881), concerning in part the Virginia Constitutional Convention of 1829-1830; Verlinda Alexander (Porter) Grigsby (1793-1846); Lucien P. Grigsby (1820-1894?); Elizabeth J. Grigsby (b. 1827) of Chicago, Danville, Ky., and St. Louis, Mo.; Norborne Eaton Chandler (1825-1884) of "Fancy Hill," Rockbridge County, concerning in part his Confederate military service; and Lucy Maria (Grigsby) Chandler (1830-1886) of Danville, Ky. Also included are correspondence and estate papers for Abner Porter (1743-1814), Benjamin Porter (d. 1808), Elisha Grigsby (1774- 11847), and Joseph Grigsby ([1768-1820] including a report, 1821-1838, concerning Reuben Grigsby's administration of the estate). Also included is the diary, 1850-1851, of George Hugh Blair Grigsby while in Texas, including school teaching accounts, 1847-1851, and accounts for the hiring and selling of slaves; commonplace book, 1818-1823, of Timothy Chandler (1751-1831) of "Broomfield," Caroline County, Va.; and genealogical notes concerning the Chandler, Grigsby, and McNutt families.
