Mark Mooring collection, 1923-1959.

Title: Mark Mooring collection, 1923-1959.

The collection consists of two folders of material, primarily photographs and correspondence collected by Mark Mooring throughout his career. The first folder contains correspondence ranging in date from 1923 through 1959. Also included are several undated letters, a newspaper clipping and an invitation to the Fifth Annual American Fashion Critics' Award ceremony. Of special note in folder one are letters from Greer Garson, Frank Alvah Parsons, Oscar Hammerstein and Norman Norell. The second folder in the collection consists of early 20th century photographs depicting women's clothing, as well as photographs representing various museum holdings from the 16th century through the 20th century. The majority of the garments represented in the museum photographs are from The Elizabeth Day McCormick Collection in Boston's Museum of Fine Arts. The remaining photographs depict garments held by the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Brooklyn Museum.

The 8,991 sketches in pencil, ink and watercolor are by staff artists and represent clothing and millinery available to order in Bergdorf's custom salon. Representative designers include Dior, Balenciaga, Halston and Courrèges. House designers included Mary Gleason, Leslie Morris and Bernard Newman. The collection includes a complete run of sketches from 1950 to 1969, millinery sketches from the 1930's and a scrapbook of sketches from the 1940's. Printed material includes a pamphlet describing French and Italian designer clothing chosen for the custom salon in 1967 by Halston and Mme. Roux, the salon's director, and preliminary manuscripts and galley proofs for Booton Herndon's 1956 Bergdorf's on the Plaza. One box contains reminiscences by and about members of the Goodman family and papers about the early career of house designers Bernard Newman, Mary Gleason and Leslie Morris.

The Fashion and Costume Sketch Collection documents the work of 68 American designers. It includes original sketches in pencil, ink, and watercolor, many of which are augmented by fabric swatches. Also included are some photographs of completed garments and notes relating to the designs. The work of the garment industry of New York's Seventh Avenue is heavily represented, along with a smaller amount of material documenting costumes by Broadway and Hollywood designers.
