Bergdorf Goodman sketch collection, 1930-1969.

The 8,991 sketches in pencil, ink and watercolor are by staff artists and represent clothing and millinery available to order in Bergdorf's custom salon. Representative designers include Dior, Balenciaga, Halston and Courrèges. House designers included Mary Gleason, Leslie Morris and Bernard Newman. The collection includes a complete run of sketches from 1950 to 1969, millinery sketches from the 1930's and a scrapbook of sketches from the 1940's. Printed material includes a pamphlet describing French and Italian designer clothing chosen for the custom salon in 1967 by Halston and Mme. Roux, the salon's director, and preliminary manuscripts and galley proofs for Booton Herndon's 1956 Bergdorf's on the Plaza. One box contains reminiscences by and about members of the Goodman family and papers about the early career of house designers Bernard Newman, Mary Gleason and Leslie Morris.

Bergdorf Goodman began as a custom tailoring shop, known for its fine workmanship. A ready-to-wear department was added in 1923, but Bergdorf's continued to offer custom clothing and milinnery well into the 1960's.
