Collection provides rich documentation of the personal life, literary development, and philanthropic activities of Sallie Bingham. Includes correspondence, writings, subject files, diaries and notebooks, legal and financial papers, and photographic media. Included also are records of The Kentucky Foundation for Women, a philanthropic organization founded by Bingham; THE AMERICAN VOICE, a literary journal founded by Bingham; and Santa Fe Stages, a regional theater founded by Bingham. The Writings, Diaries and Notebooks, and Correspondence series compose the bulk of the collection. There are 551 electronic documents that have been migrated to the Special Collections server. The Writings Series is substantial, is central to, and in fact comprises over half of the collection. It includes drafts, research, correspondence and publicity related to such novels as SMALL VICTORIES, UPSTATE, MATRON OF HONOR, and STRAIGHT MAN, her memoir PASSION AND PREJUDICE, the writing and production of the plays THE AWAKENING and THE DEATH OF HENRY FLAGLER as well as poetry and many short, personal essays. The Diaries and Notebooks Series and the Correspondence Series contain material spanning her entire life -- from her adolescence in Louisville, Kentucky to her experiences living in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The Correspondence Series contains both literary and personal correspondence between Bingham and such well-known authors, activists, and artists as Judy Chicago and Gloria Steinem. Bingham, born into a prominent Louisville, Ky. family that owned THE LOUISVILLE COURIER-JOURNAL, worked for the newspaper as book page editor, 1982-1985. She also took an active seat on the board of the Bingham Enterprises, which was responsible for the COURIER-JOURNAL and other media corporations in the Louisville area. Bingham's desire to sell her shares in the stock in the newspaper resulted in the sale of the COURIER-JOURNAL in 1986. The Bingham family and the break-up of the Bingham Enterprises were the subject of at least four books (THE BINGHAMS OF LOUISVILLE, HOUSE OF DREAMS, THE PATRIARCH and Bingham's PASSION AND PREJUDICE) and much media attention. This collection consists of letters dated 1920-1968 written by Thomas, Nora, and Barbara Bullitt to their parents William Marshall and Nora Iasigi Bullitt. The letters dated 1920-1938 were written by the children while they were away at boarding schools and mostly concern their education, family life, and social life. The letters dated 1939-1968 were written after the Bullitt children began their careers or married and concern current events, social events, and descriptions of family life. There were several letters from the Bullitt grandchildren as well.

Collection contains correspondence; subject files; a small group of Barry Bingham, Sr.'s records; financial records, 1924-1989; and genealogical information of the Montague, LeFroy, and Caperton families in Virginia, as well as the Bingham and Hogg-Alves families in North Carolina. Mary Bingham's correspondence files contain letters filed alphabetically by correspondents names. They include personal letters regarding varied interests, personal friends, and solicitation letters from charitable organizations across Kentucky and the nation. Also included are photocopies of Mary and Barry Bingham's correspondence while he was stationed in London, and later Guam, during World War II. Her subject files (filed alphabetically) include pamphlets, newsletters, newspaper clippings, and correspondence from organizations and individuals (see folder listing). They inlcude files on the Council for Basic Education, the Courier-Journal, the Episcopal Church's Book of Common Prayer, the Kentucky Bookmobile Project, Radcliffe College, speeches to various organizations and meetings, strip mining regulation, and the University of Louisville. The financial records include gift tax files, 1936-1987; federal and state income tax returns, 1924-1986; tax records for the Bingham Enterprises Foundation, 1971-1986; and financial records for the Mary C. and Barry Bingham, Sr., Foundation, Inc., 1986-1989; and requests made to the foundation. Collection also includes a small group of Barry Bingham, Sr., papers. They include his poetry scrapbook; typed manuscripts of his unpublished novel, "The Lonesome Road;" his thesis for distinction from Harvard; correspondence, 1936-1971, regarding his sister, Henrietta Bingham; oral history project interviews; and other miscellaneous items.
