MARY (CAPERTON) BINGHAM, 1904-

Mary Bingham was born Mary Caperton in Richmond, Virginia, on December 24, 1904, the daughter of Clifford R. Caperton and Helena (Lefroy) Caperton. She graduated from Radcliffe College in 1928 and pursued post-graduate studies at the American School of Classical Studies, Athens, in 1929.

In 1931 she married Barry Bingham. Born in Louisville, Kentucky, on February 10, 1906, and graduated from Harvard in 1928, BB was successively a reporter, secretary, and associate publisher of the Courier-Journal and the Louisville Times, and editor and publisher from 1945 to 1971. MCB became vice-president and a director of both newspapers and of WHAS, Inc., of which BB was chairman. They had five children, two of them now deceased.
