1849 graduate of Amherst College. Clergyman, educator, author and politician. Professor of Mental and Moral Philosophy, Amherst College, 1858-1877; President, 1877-1890. Member, U.S. House of Representatives, 44th Congress, 1875-1877. Trustee, Mount Holyoke College, 1872-1895. Member, Board of Visitors, Andover Theological Seminary, 1874-1892. Married Elizabeth Tillman James in 1854 and had four children: Anna, Mabel, Elizabeth and William.
Clergyman, educator and politician, Julius Hawley Seelye (1824 - 1895) was born in Bethel, CT in 1824. He was educated at Amherst College (Class of 1849) and the Auburn Theological Seminary. He studied philosophy and theology in Halle Germany from 1852 - 1853. Seelye was ordained in Schenectady New York on August 10, 1853, where he served as the Pastor of the 1st Dutch Reform Church until 1858.
Seelye served Amherst College for 32 years as both a member of the faculty and as president. Seelye was appointed Professor of Mental and Moral Philosophy in 1858 and filled that position until 1890. During this time, Seelye was a member of the Massachusetts Commission on Taxation (1874- 1875) and a member of the Forty-fourth Congress (1875 - 1877). In 1877 Seelye was appointed president of Amherst College and served in that role until 1890.
During his career at Amherst Seelye led a rich and varied life. He toured the world (1872-1873); lectured on For Missions, Andover Theological Seminary (1873-1874); was Pastor of College Church (1877 - 1892); incorporated Clarke Institute for Deaf Mutes Northampton (1867-1887); was a Trustee of Mt. Holyoke College (1872-1895) and served as a Member of the Board of Visitors for Andover Theological Seminary (1874-1892). Seelye also served as a Corporate Member ABCFM (1876-1895) and as President of the Congregational Home Missionary Society (1885-1892).
Seelye's published works include: The Way, The Truth and The Life; Christian Missions; The Relations of Learning and Religon; Duty: A Book for Schools; and Citizenship: A Book for Classes in Government and Law. In addition he published lectures to educated Hindus; translated Schwegler's History of Philosophy; and revised and edited Hickok's Moral Science and Empirical Psychology.
In 1854, Julius Hawley Seelye married Elizabeth Tillman James. They had four children: Anna (Emerson); Mabel (Bixler); Elizabeth (Bixler); and William.

The papers include correspondence (comprising over half of the collection), journals, manuscripts of Samuel Wells Williams's Syllabic Dictionary of the Chinese Language, and an annotated copy of the 1848 edition of his The Middle Kingdom, themes and lecture notes by Frederick Wells Williams, diaries, newspaper clippings, articles on China, maps, and pictures. The bulk of the correspondence relates to S. W. Williams, missionary, diplomat, and sinologue. The period between 1845 and 1855 has extensive correspondence with missionaries and with James Dwight Dana and Matthew C. Perry, whom Williams accompanied on his mission to open Japan and on his return visit in 1854. Williams's letters to friends and family comment on progress made and their reception in Japan. In 1856 Williams became secretary and interpreter to the American Legation in China and many of the letters refer to Chinese problems of the following twenty years. His correspondents include, in addition to Dana and Perry, Anson Burlingame, Hamilton Fish, Asa Gray, Frederick Low, William Bradford Reed, and William Henry Seward. The remaining correspondence covers the period 1885 to 1939, encompassing the correspondence of F. W. Williams, Yale professor, and Wayland Wells Williams, writer.

Century Company records
The Century Company published the Century Illustrated Monthly Magazine, which was widely regarded as the best general periodical of its time, performing a role as cultural arbiter during the 1880s and 1890s. It was founded in New York City in 1881 and also published the children's magazine St. Nicholas, dictionaries, and books. The Century Company records date from 1870 to the 1930s and chiefly contain correspondence with contributors, readers, public figures, and literary agents. A number of manuscripts and proofs in the collection are extensively edited and taken with annotations on letters provide a detailed record of the outlook, standards, and functions of the company.

His son, Williston Walker (1860-1922) was professor of history/churchhistory at Bryn Mawr College (1888-1889), Hartford Theological Seminary(1889-1901) and Yale University (1901-1922). He also served as a trustee ofAmherst College (1896-1922), acting dean of Yale Graduate School (1916-1917)and provost of Yale University (1919-1922).

In 1856 Williams became secretary and interpreter to the American Legation in China and many of the letters refer to Chinese problems of the following 20 years. His correspondents include, in addition to Dana and Perry, Anson Burlingame, Hamilton Fish, Asa Gray, Frederick Low, William Bradford Reed, and William Henry Seward.
