Seidl Society Records, 1889-1898

Title: Seidl Society Records 1889-1898

Anton Seidl (1850-1898), an influential Hungarian conductor, came to New York City in 1885 and became affiliated with the Metropolitan Opera and the New York Philharmonic Society. The Seidl Society of Brooklyn, created by Laura Langford Holloway and other affluent female patrons of music in Brooklyn, sponsored programs featuring Seidl at the Brooklyn Academy of Music and at Brighton Beach. This collection contains the papers of the Seidl Society including roughly 300 correspondences from Seidl to society President Laura Carter Holloway Langford, roughly 300 society programs and program notes, five scrapbooks from 1889-1898, four speeches and news clippings, and undated materials.

The Benson John Lossing Collection is an assortment of correspondence, drawings, writings, and memorabilia relating to the 19th century historian, illustrator, and editor of The American Historical Review (1813-1891). Predominantly correspondence, the collection centers around Lossing's information gathering for his popularizations of American history, while it also illuminates the early publishing industry in the United States.

Bound volume containing copies of letters, usually written from Mount Lebanon, N.Y., concerning Shaker products, Civil War involvement and taxes, community news, spiritual matters, and theological issues, 1861-1862. Manuscript copies of letters concerning the destitution and persecution of Shakers in Sweden, 1867; and of a 60 page letter from Elder William Leonard to Elder Frederick W. Evans relating his talk on Shakerism before a rural New England church, 1867. Letters by Hannah Ames and Mary Dyer concerning their claims of mistreatment by Shakers, 1819. Original letters include one from the King of Norway and Sweden thanking the Shakers for a book sent him, 1841; seven to Laura Holloway Langford about Mr. Langford's death and news of Mount Lebanon and Canterbury Shakers, 1902-1911; five by Sister Sarah Collins on flax, stone jars, Red Cross activities, and Shaker community news, 1932-1935; and others between Shakers concerning products, community news, theology, and expressions of religious love, 1850-1944.

Title: Papers. 1874-1912.

Collection consists of letters written to Mrs. Langford from Shakers at New Lebanon and items from her literary career. Shaker correspondents were Frederick W. Evans, Alonzo Giles Hollister, Antoinette Doolittle, Daniel Offord, M. Catherine Allen, Sadie and Emma Neale, and Anna White. It is with the last named that Mrs. Langford corresponded most frequently and for the longest length of time. Twenty-nine letters from Daniel Offord to Mrs. Langford dating from June 28, 1906 to December 15, 1910, concern her purchase and operation of the New Canaan farm. Other items include scrapbooks covering her literary career, handwritten articles that were presumably later published, photographs, and an elaborate membership certificate in the Theosophical Society.

This collection includes letters, some presumably in Madame Blavatsky's own hand, photographs of the leaders of the theosophical movement, several printed articles from late nineteenth-century periodicals, and items bearing the name of Laura Langford (at the time Laura Holloway). While no Shaker is specifically mentioned in these items, the Shakers and Theosophists are connected through their common interest in spiritualism and Mrs. Langford's ties to both movements.
