Alonzo Giles Hollister, a prolific writer and Shaker leader, lived at the New Lebanon, New York, Shaker community. On page 121 of this volume he noted: "I began this book, for reasons I do not remember, gave it to Andrew B., a youth of 16. I felt dissatisfied with his treatment of the book, & he returned it to me, & I finisht it out, thinking it too good & nice a book to throw away, or to spoil by defacement. The selection of songs, I think exceedingly choice."
