Title: Papers, 1704-1786.

Manuscripts, in multiple hands, of letters and documents, mostly relating to George Keppel, 3rd Earl of Albemarle. The papers primarily concern the management of the family estates in Ireland and Holland; financial affairs and legal disputes, especially those arising from Albemarle's conduct as governor of Havana in 1762-1763; and drafts of the will of Admiral Keppel, Albemarle's brother. Vol. 1 contains 65 items dated between 1704-1786, primarily letters to and from Albemarle's agents and lawyers, especially Joshua Sharpe, William Cooper, and Mark Whyte, concerning lawsuits in which he was involved over lands and estates in Ireland. Many of the letters concern the contested estate of Carbery and the difficulty with tenants at Castle Robertmore and Phillestien; other documents mention Albemarle's lawsuits with John Earl of Kildare and the Duke of Lienster. The volume also contains a legal document granting Henry Keppel the office of Searcher, Packer, and Gauger in the Port of Limerick. Laid in at the end are two drafts of a declaration of trust, to be endorsed on Laura Keppel's marriage settlement. Vol. 2 contains 31 documents, primarily legal documents, regarding the contested sale of the Voorst estate by Albermarle to Otto Frederic, Count Lynden in 1755-1756. The volume contains documents contesting the will of Sir Arnold Joost van Keppel, 1st Earl of Albemarle, by his children William and Sophia, in regard to Sophia's share of the land and furniture of the Voorst estate; documents signed by Albemarle's siblings Augustus, William, Frederic, Caroline, Elizabeth, and Henry, declaring their consent to his sale; summaries of the case; and documents from Count Lynden confirming the sale. Many of the documents are in French or Dutch. Vol. 3 contains 49 letters dated between 1770-1785, many of them dealing with business left unfinished by the death of George Keppel, 3rd Earl of Albemarle, in 1772. Numerous letters concern the maintenance and guardianship of his infant son, especially by his mother Lady Albemarle and his uncle Admiral Augustus Albemarle. Other letters concern disputes over duties on flour in Havana; the acreage of Durhams and its estate; and the tenancy of Castle Robertmore; as well as a letter from Augustus Albemarle in 1778 concerning his will. Vol. 4 contains 50 letters, dated between 1762-1786. Many letters refer to the suit brought by Walton against Albemarle concerning duties on flour during his governorship of Havana. Other letters concern the contested Carbery estate; Count Lynden's purchase of the Voorst estate; a survey of the acreage of Castle Robertmore and Fillisteen; and other leases of Albemarle's Irish estates. Vol. 5 contains 61 items, dated between 1755-1763, all regarding the contested sale of the Voorst estate in Holland. Many of the letters are written by R. Wolters, Albemarle's agent, and concern the demands of Lady Sophia Thomas, the daughter of the late 1st Earl of Albemarle, on her share of the estate and furniture; the other letters discuss the negotiations of the sale of the estate to Otto Frederick, Count Lynden. The volume also includes copies of legal documents by the Keppel siblings declaring that they concede to the sale of Voorst. Several of the documents are in French. Vol. 6 contains 82 letters, dated between 1722-1754, relating to Albemarle's lawsuits over estates in Ireland, including the contested Carbery estate and the lands of the Earl of Kildare. The volume also includes a number of letters regarding the amount of rent paid by Mr. Keating, as well as several letters inquiring about the time of the Duke of Richmond's death as it relates to a contested will. Vol. 7 contains 78 letters, dated between 1739-1769. Several letters concern the sale of the Voorst estate contested by Sophia Thomas, including a letter from her explaining her position, and a letter from Albemarle to Thomas. The volume contains numerous other letters written by Albemarle, including letters concerning his governorship of Havana. In 1763, he writes a letter explaining his position in a lawsuit regarding his exercise of the governor's power to grant "an exclusive liberty for the importation of blacks" into Havana, providing reasons why it was his duty as governor to prevent the general importation of slaves. He also explains why he laid an embargo on the exportation of flour out of Havana. Elsewhere, he defends to his sister Caroline the care with which he studied his father's will; negotiates the purchase of the Quidenham estate; lends money to Lord Bolingbroke; and is approached about becoming involved in a lawsuit over a Spanish ship taken when Havana surrendered to the British forces under Albemarle's command. Vol. 8 contains 48 items, dated between 1723-1778. Numerous items are letters requesting payment of rents from Lord Carbery and Mr. Keating, including two from Lady Albemarle. The volume also includes a letter from Albemarle explaining his contracting decisions as governor of Havana, and two printed forms certifying the baptism of Henry Keppel and Elizabeth Keppel. Vol. 9 contains 5 items, dated between 1778-1782. The items include a letter by Augustus Keppel listing changes to his will; a draft of his will dated 1779; an undated list titled Legacies intended for the present will; and a draft of Augustus Keppel's will dated 1782. The volume also includes empty marbled covers labeled with Phillipps 14863.

Manuscript, in a single hand, of a collection of newspaper clippings of biographies of about 400 members of Parliament. The clippings are arranged in alphabetical order by name, with handwritten annotations of the constituencies represented. The clippings provide summaries of the members' voting record and political alliances, and often provide humorous commentary upon their personalities and foibles. Members of Parliament include Charles James Fox; George Keppel; Augustus Keppel; Lord Frederick North; and Charles Howard, Earl of Surrey. The volume includes two clippings on William Strahan which mock his origins and voting record. The biographies are followed by a shorter section titled Miscellaneous Papers, consisting of about 30 entries, which include newspaper obituaries of notable persons as well as both handwritten and printed humorous poems. Obituaries include those of the Princess Dowager of Wales, written by Strahan; David Garrick; the printers Alexander Kincaid and David Hall; and the bookseller Gavin Hamilton. Several clippings are Strahan's letters to editors of Edinborough newspapers concerning a bill in Parliament on behalf of booksellers. Also included are several clippings related to America and Benjamin Franklin, including critiques of William Robertson, the author of History of America; a letter to Benjamin Franklin by Grenville; an inscription upon a chamber-stove invented by Franklin; and an exchange in the Daily Advertiser between William Strahan and Franklin concerning the British treatment of the American colonies. A handwritten piece is titled Dialogue between Lord Hillsborough and Dr. Franklin, dated 1771. The humorous poems in this section include Irregular ode, by Henry Dundas; and On the death of an eminent surgeon, by an eminent hand. These pieces are followed by 12 clippings related to the death of William Strahan, His Majesty's printer, as well as 3 clippings reporting on the death of Mrs. M. P. Strahan, widow of the late William Strahan.

Colbert Torcy and the Duchesse Du Lude. Many of the items from the French Revolution represent the work of the Committee of Public Safety and the Committee of General Security. French Revolutionary leaders represented in the collection include François-Antoine Boissy D'Anglas, Jean-Baptiste-Noel Bouchotte, Pierre Joseph Cambon, Lazare Carnot, Jean-Marie Collot D'Herbois, l'Abbʹe de Fauchet, Philippe-Antoine Merlin de Douai, Jean Victor Moreau. The Balch Family Papers consist of seven boxes and forty-three volumes that span from 1755 to 1963 with the bulk of the collection dating between 1870 and 1920. The materials in this collection offer a glimpse into the family history, personal lives, and interests of the Balch family, mainly Thomas (1821-1877) and his sons Edwin Swift (1856-1927) and Thomas Willing (1866-1927). The majority of the collection is comprised of the incoming and outgoing correspondence of members of the Balch family, their informal writings, and numerous volumes of published works, either penned by or property of a Balch family member. The collection has been divided into six series:Thomas Balch and Emily Swift Balch (1780-1914); Edwin Swift Balch and Eugenia MacFarlane Balch (1859-1924); Elise Willing Balch (1881-1914); Thomas Willing Balch and Dulany Whiting Balch (1867-1929); Early Balches and related families (1755-1963); and Miscellaneous photographs, volumes, and artifacts (1755-1909). The papers from Forbes's campaign against the French at Ft. Duquesne contain correspondence, reports about Indian allies and the colonial governments, military returns and instructions, intelligence reports and some financial papers. They concern strategy, supply, the advance across Pennsylvania, colonial cooperation, provisioning of the troops, Indian negotiations and relations with British and colonial officers. Material is present from other British campaigns in the French and Indian war, particularly the assault at Ft. Ticonderoga, the massacre at Ft. William Henry, the siege of Louisburg, and Braddock's defeat which is described in the letterbook of Sir John St.Clair, the highest ranking officer to survive.

Collins, Arthur Tooker, fl. 1755-1793. Marine account book for British marines on board HMS Invincible [in various waters], 1756-1767.

Title: Marine account book for British marines on board HMS Invincible [in various waters], 1756-1767.

Collins became Captain in the Royal Marines in 1755, fought at Louisburg in 1758 and at Belle Isle in 1761, the same year he was breveted Major. Later, he commanded a marine battalion at Boston (1775-76) and became Commandant at Plymouth (1784-93). The Invincible carried 74 guns. Part [1] notes total prize money received while Collins was Captain under Sir George Pocock, Augustus Keppel, and Edward Boscawen, who was on board in June, 1756. Also, columnar list of marines on board: name, age, height, county of birth, trade, and death or discharge date. Part [2] contains extracts of orders issued during the campaign in the Low Countries: regulations; duty in cantonment, upon the march, or in camp; other standing orders (e.g. concerning plundering and maurauding, etc.); plans of the battalion [signed?] Robert Napier. Also lists mariners who had died on board, with an accounting of their goods.

There are three separate instructions. The first instructions order Braddock to America to assume command and concern the levying and provisioning of troops, alliance with the Indians, and the ending of illegal trade with the French. He concludes with directions to Braddock to acquaint himself with recent events "relating to the Summons of the Fort which was Erecting on the Forks of the Monongehela, and the Skirmish that followed soon after, and likewise of the Action in the great Meadows, near the River Ohio ..." a direct reference to George Washington's recent expedition to the Ohio, though Washington is not mentioned by name. Private instructions concern action to be taken if the colonies do not raise sufficient funds to support the troops. Secret instructions, actually drafted by King George's son, the Duke of Cumberland, order Braddock to conduct a multi-objective campaign against the French forts on the Ohio, the falls and passes of the Niagara, Crown Point on Lake Champlain, and Fort Beauséjour in Nova Scotia. Among the British and colonials mentioned in the document are Sir John St. Clair, Deputy Quarter Master General; Sir Peter Halkett, Commander of the 44th Regiment of Foot; Colonel Thomas Dunbar of the 48th Regiment of Foot; Viscount Augustus Keppel, naval commander and later first lord of the Admiralty; Robert Dinwiddie, Lt. Governor of Virginia; Sir William Johnson, colonial superintendent of Indian affairs; Sir William Pepperell, Massachusetts merchant, politician and soldier; Charles Lawrence, governor of Nova Scotia, and William Shirley, Governor of Marssachusetts.
