This collection contains the papers of Smithsonian chief clerk, bibliographer, and collector William Jones Rhees (1830-1907), of materials assembled chiefly for their autograph value, though the collection contains various groups of related materials. Includes papers of American physicist and surveyor Alexander Dallas Bache (1806-1867), American geographer Henry Rowe Schoolcraft (1793-1864), National Institute for the Promotion of Sciences, and the Smithsonian Institution, as well as correspondence of William Jones Rhees, letters and papers addressed to the United States Pension Bureau, letters and papers related to Indian affairs, and miscellaneous autograph letters and documents.

Facsimile of a genealogical chart tracing the descendants of Thomas Smith (1648-1694), a governor and landgrave of the Province of Carolina, through to the Holmes family. The chart includes his grandson the Reverend Josiah Smith, a South Carolina clergyman. The chart was created by Francis Simmons Holmes of Charleston, S.C., and is dated August 1874.

Title: Mitchell King papers, 1842-1860.

Papers include letters, an invoice, a notice, and lists pertaining to Mitchell King. Letters are from Henry C. King at Matanza [Plantation, Prince George Parish, S.C.] (1847 April 26) concerning family and social matters, John Pennington at Philadelphia (1850 Feb. 8) concerning Pennsylvania now paying what it owes to him (also about family matters, preserving the republic, and their mutual interest in early European occupation of Carolina and working of the gold mines before English settlement), F.S. Holmes (June 25; ca. 1857) concerning King's interest in and subscription to the museum [College of Charleston Museum?], and J.L. Petigru (Aug. 15) in which he states he is sending him "the Times" concerning the opinion of one of the judges on the marriage question. An invoice (1853 July 13) from Hector Bossange of Paris with a note (1853 August 17) from Edward Bossange (the New York proprietor of Hector Bossange) notifying King that the third volume of Humboldt's Cosmos has arrived and will be sent as soon as Bossange can pick it up at the Custom House in New York. A printed notice with handwritten additions (1842 May 7) from Daniel Ravenel, president of the Bible Society of Charleston requests that King attend a meeting of the Board of Managers. A list (1860) arranged by date (1858-1860) contains names and amounts of money. Another list (n.d.) contains the names of various individuals.

The collection consists of single or small groupings of items arranged in units by provenance. Included are tax forms, records of accounts, slave lists and bills of sale, land patents, schedules of debt, wills, marriage licenses, naturalization papers, invitations, proclamations, commissions, sermons, speeches, and reminiscences, predominantly from North Carolina, Virginia, and other southern states. There is little correspondence.

A photocopy of a biographical sketch of Francis Simmons Holmes written by his daughter Mrs. George F. Von Kolnitz in January 1907. Francis S. Holmes, a native of Charleston, became an invertebrate paleontologist and curator of the Charleston Museum.

Colcock family papers, 1855-1927.

Collection contains correspondence, miscellaneous items, photographs, and ephemera such as calling cards and invitations. Scattered correspondence dates from 1856 to 1927. A letter of 20 Sept. 1861 from Hetty E. Hutson in McPhersonville (S.C.) to her cousin William Ferguson Colcock mentions the death of his daughter Emmeline. Another letter of 1861 from W. D. Gregorie to his wife [Esther Hutson Colcock Gregorie] mainly concerns family matters. Other correspondents include Mary C. Huguenin, William F. Colcock, Jr., Mary W. Colcock Gregorie, Charles Jones Colcock Hutson, and other members of the Hutson family. Among the ephemera are several invitations sent to various members of the Colcock famlily by Dr. [Francis S.] and Mrs. Holmes, for the wedding of Arthur H. Locke and Hennie T. Holmes in 1867. Other invitations are to the St. Cecilia Society ball (undated) and commencement balls at South Carolina College and College of Charleston (1850s). There is also an invitation (1856) to Miss E. Colcock from Thomas S. Bee, requesting her company at Strawinskis Saloon in Charleston. Miscellaneous items include a description of a dream (n.d.); two miniature sketches of a child and a dog; and accounts of dues for the Stoney Creek Association (1888-1901). Photographs are of Adelaide Huguenin Colcock, Hutson Gregorie, Samuel Hay Gantt, Hettie Hutson Colcock, Richard Hutson Colcock, and others.
