Title: Arthur Bronson papers, 1829-1871.

Correspondence, land conveyances, accounts, receipts, abstracts of title, deeds, mortgages, leases, foreclosure papers, indentures, and other legal documents, mostly relating to Bronson's real estate business and transactions in Chicago, elsewhere in Illinois, Wisconsin, Indiana, and Michigan. Correspondents include agents, land speculators, and many businessmen especially in Chicago and in Milwaukee. Topics include land speculation, surveys, preemption claims, and day to day operation of Bronson's business. Bronson's association with Chicago politician Hiram Pearson, ca. 1835-1844, is represented by over 100 items. The collection is arranged in two parts: part one is miscellaneous papers in chronological order, and part two is composed of papers involving well-known businessmen, divided into folders by name and the folders filed alphabetically. Collection includes a 20,000 dollar bond for Canal Block no. 1, June 13, 1838, signed by many leading businessmen; also a statement of leased lots in Block 1 and an account of rents from Jan. 1 to Nov. 1, 1840; and abstracts of title for lots in Block 1. Also present are papers re. the conveyances made by Billy Caldwell of land reserved to him by the Treaty of Prairie Du Chien in 1829 and other land. There is a copy of the charter for a Chicago cemetery (later Lincoln Park); items re. Beaubien family land claims; and letters from John Temple in the early 1830s about the astonishing growth of Chicago and the potential increase in land values that would be created by building a railroad or canal. Papers, ca. 1839-1844, detail the financing, construction, and furnishing of the elegant hotel known as the Lake House for 100,000 dollars at the corner of Kinzie Street, Rush Street, and Michigan Street in Chicago. A few items related to the Galena and Chicago Union Railroad Company. Several letters by Charles Butler concern property in Indiana near LaPorte; other items concern litigation about later ownership of Archibald Clybourne's 12-acre farm.

This collection consists of many of Cooper's own papers, along with some papers of other family members, which were in the possession of Cooper's great-grandson, Paul Fenimore Cooper, Jr. It contains a number of manuscripts of Cooper's works, including four of his novels (_Red Rover_, _The Bravo_, _Satanstoe_, and _The Chainbearer_), along with fragments of other works. The papers also include extensive correspondence, notably with Cooper's American publisher Carey and Lea, and with members of the Cooper and De Lancey families. There are many letters written by Cooper to Commodore William Branford Shubrick (1790-1874). Also in the collection are business papers and ledgers, copies of contracts, deeds, and indentures.

Business records and personal papers of several generations of the Heard family. The oldest group of papers, 1770-1834, is that of John Heard, who made his wealth from the manufacture and sale of rum, the outfitting of privateers, and trade with the West Indies. The largest and most important group of papers in the collection is that of Augustine Heard and his various partnerships. His papers cover, first, his travels as supercargo for Boston and Salem merchants who were trading in the Far East, then his activities as partner in the great shipping firm of Russell and Company. In 1836 he left Russell and Company. By 1840 he had become the head of his own firm, Augustine Heard and Company, founded with Joseph Coolidge. Included in the collection are records and papers of Thomas Hunt and Company of Hong Kong, 1863-1869, which counted Augustine Heard and Company among its customers.

Collection contains the papers of the Sedgwick family of western Massachusetts and New York City, specifically those of Theodore Sedgwick (1746-1813), a Federalist legislator and judge; his wife Pamela Dwight Sedgwick (1753-1807); five of their children - Theodore Sedgwick II (1780-1839), Henry Dwight Sedgwick (1789-1831), Robert Sedgwick (1787-1841), Catharine Maria Sedgwick (1789-1867) and Charles Sedgwick (1791-1856); and their children's spouses and descendants, including Theodore Sedgwick III (1811-1859), Jane Minot Sedgwick (1795-1859), Jane Minot Sedgwick II (1821-1889), Henry Dwight Sedgwick II (1824-1903), Elizabeth Ellery Sedgwick (1799-1862), Henrietta Ellery Sedgwick (1829-1902), Katherine Sedgwick Minot (1820-1880) and Alexander Sedgwick (1867-1929). The collection consists of family correspondence, personal and professional papers, literary and political writings, journals, commonplace-books, scrapbooks, and account books. Judge Theodore Sedgwick's papers document his career as an agent for the Continental Army, representative to the Continental Congress, member of the U.S. House of Representatives, justice of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court, and Federalist leader. Other topics include family events, the social and political scenes in Stockbridge and Boston, the mental illness and treatment of Pamela Dwight Sedgwick (1753-1807) and her son Henry Dwight Sedgwick (1789-1831), the literary career of author Catharine Maria Sedgwick (1789-1867), travel of various family members to France and Italy, papers relating to the conversion of Jane Minot Sedgwick (1821-1889) to Catholicism, and New York lawyer Henry Dwight Sedgwick's (1824-1903) work with the New York Underground Railway Company from 1871 to 1892. Also within the collection are the papers of families related to the Sedgwicks by marriage, including the papers of Boston lawyer William Minot (1783-1873), his wife, Louisa Davis Minot (1788-1858), William's father, historian George Richards Minot (1758-1802) and Louisa's uncle, Rev. James Freeman (1759-1835.) Collection also contains papers of the Davis, Dwight, Freeman, Pomeroy, Sergeant, Watts and Williams families, as well as letters of Fanny Kemble Butler (1809-1893). Historical documents acquired by Theodore Sedgwick (1811-1859) include papers of Danish sea captain and inventor John Morke (d.1755), New York Collector of Customs Archibald Kennedy (1685-1763), and British Royal Navy officer Archibald Kennedy (ca. 1723-1794) who commanded the blockade of New York harbor during the Stamp Act crisis of 1765. Also here are papers of New York Attorney General John Tabor Kempe (1735-1792), and Continental Congress President Elias Baudinot (1740-1841), as well as a 1759 orderly book from the Siege of Quebec and papers relating to Shays' Rebellion.
