American composer and conductor of military bands.
Edwin Franko Goldman (1878-1956), a founder of the American Bandmasters Association and its first president, was a composer, scholar, and prominent conductor. In 1911 he formed his own band which began a summer concert series, later know as the Guggenhiem Memorial Concert Series, in New York City in 1918; this tradition continued under other directors including Goldman's son, Richard Franko Goldman, who led the band from 1956-1979. Goldman championed the performance of neglected band music and gave the American premieres of a number of important works, including commissioned pieces from many contemporary composers including Ottorino Respighi, Percy Grainger, Morton Gould, and Virgil Thomson.
Edwin Franko Goldman (1878-1956) was an American composer and conductor for military bands. As an avocation, he was also a collector of autographs, letters, photographs, and musical scores of many musical celebrities from his lifetime and before. In May 1954 he donated his collection to University of Michigan band director William Revelli for use by the band. The "Edwin Franko Goldman Room" in Harris Hall at the University of Michigan was dedicated to display the collection.
Edwin Franko Goldman (1878-1956), a founder of the American Bandmasters Association, was born in Louisville, Kentucky on 1 January 1878. Taken to New York to study music, he was eventually enrolled at the National Conservatory where he studied cornet and was a composition student of Antonín Dvořák. From 1899 to 1909 Goldman was solo cornetist with the Metropolitan Opera orchestra. In 1911 he formed his own band which began a summer concert series in New York City in 1918 and was later renamed the Guggenheim Memorial Concert Series; this tradition continued under other directors including Goldman's son, Richard Franko Goldman, who led the band from 1956-1979. The band ceased operations in 2005.
Goldman championed the performance of neglected band music and gave the American premieres of a number of important works, including Berlioz's Symphonie funebre et triomphale . Goldman believed strongly in the need for new music to enrich the repertoire of the band, and commissioned many contemporary composers including Ottorino Respighi, Percy Grainger, Morton Gould, and Virgil Thomson to write for the medium. He composed over one-hundred marches including On the Mall (1923), and wrote several books, including The Goldman Band System (1935).
In addition to being a founder, Goldman was the American Bandmasters Association's first president, and second honorary life president. He died on 21 February 1956 in New York, leaving behind an unpublished autobiography, Facing the Music, the manuscript of which is in the Library of Congress.

Serge Koussevitzky Archive 1920-1976 (bulk 1924-1951)
The archive is a collection of correspondence, personal and business papers, photographs, and other materials which document some of the most significant aspects of twentieth-century music. Through his work as a conductor and publisher, and his efforts to commission new musical works, Koussevitzky maintained deep ties with many of the finest composers and musicians of the day. These figures are represented in their personal and professional affiliations with the conductor. In addition to serving as a record of Koussevitzky's life and career, the collection extensively chronicles periods in the history of organizations such as the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Berkshire Music Center, the Koussevitzky Music Foundation, and the American International Music Fund. Material in the collection dates from Koussevitzky's years in his native Russia. The bulk of the collection dates from 1924 to 1951; it also contains material created after Koussevitzky's death, reflecting his widow's continuing work with various organizations and projects. Musical compositions commissioned by Serge Koussevitzky are part of the Serge Koussevitzky Music Foundation Collection, and are shelved in ML30.3c, ML30.3c2, ML30.3c3, and ML30.3e2.

Title:
Musicians Collection, 1727-1981, (bulk 1900-1940).
Consists of ca. 4900 items which are primarily of a visual nature and portray approximately 1700 musicians and musical groups: classical composers, conductors, soloists, and ensembles; big bands and bandleaders; bandmasters; impresarios; vaudeville artists, minstrel show performers, and other variety acts; twentieth-century American musical theater composers; and post-1940 popular singers and musical groups, including country singers. Photographs comprise about 95% of the collection. Other formats present are engravings, lithographs, clippings, concert programs, brochures, booklets, sheet music, vocal and instrumental scores, drawings, paintings, postcards, correspondence, posters, and ephemera. The bulk of the collection consists of publicity photographs, ca. 1900-1940, of vaudeville and variety acts, popular singers, jazz musicians, and brass band-type ensembles. African-American and female musicians represent a substantial portion of the figures covered by these files, especially from the late nineteenth century and the early decades of the twentieth century. A large number of cabinet cards and cartes-de-visite date from this period. Most of the photographs are gelatin silver prints. Other formats include ca. 500 engravings and lithographs of famous composers and classical musicians, 1727-1887 (bulk ca. 1880-1860). Of these, Irish musicians are prominent. About a dozen drawings in charcoal, pencil, pen and ink, and watercolor are present, as well as an oil painting of Beethoven. The great majority of the concert programs in the collection are for classical musicians appearing in New York at Mendelssohn Hall, Aeolian Hall, Carnegie Hall, and Town Hall. Many of the programs for the latter date from late March 1941. Letters in the collection, 1780s-1977 (bulk 1820s-1860s) are chiefly written by classical composers. The manuscript and printed music includes works by several American musicians, including autograph lyrics and music for twenty-eight of Paul Anka's songs, probably from the early 1960s. Published music includes arrangements and piano and vocal scores for compositions by Victor Herbert and Pietro Mascagni. Composite portraits are located at the end of the alphabet, followed by Unidentified and Miscellaneous items. A very small number of items pertain to non-musical subjects (painters, actors, etc.).

Title:
Guide to the Daily Worker and Daily World Photographs Collection, 1920-2001
The official organ of the Communist Party, USA, the Daily Worker's editorial positions reflected the policies of the Communist Party. At the same time the paper also attempted to speak to the broad left-wing community in the United States that included labor, civil rights, and peace activists, with stories covering a wide range of events, organizations and individuals in the United States and around the world. As a daily newspaper, it covered the major stories of the twentieth century. However, the paper always placed an emphasis on radical social movements, social and economic conditions particularly in working class and minority communities, poverty, labor struggles, racial discrimination, right wing extremism with an emphasis on fascist and Nazi movements, and of course the Soviet Union and the world-wide Communist movement. The paper has had a succession of names and has been published in varying frequences between daily to weekly over the course of its existence. In 2010 it ceased print publication and became an electronic, online-only, weekly publication titled the People's World. The bulk of the collection consists of printed photographic images produced through a variety of processes, collected by the photography editors of the Daily Worker and its successor newspapers as a means of maintaining an organized collection of images for use in publication. Images of many important people, groups and events associated with the CPUSA and the American Left are present in the collection, as well as images of a wide variety of people, subjects and events not explicitly linked with the CPUSA or Left politics.

Edwin Franko Goldman papers
The collection contains press-books of clippings, programs, press releases, correspondence, memorabilia, and photographs related to the Goldman Band's annual summer concerts in New York, NY; and correspondence, articles, administrative records, conference programs, committee reports, and memorabilia related to Goldman's tenure as president of the American Bandmasters Association.

In addition, the collection includes an autograph book compiled by Richard Franko Goldman's great-aunt Lybia Franko, which contains seventy-four inscriptions and autographs of prominent musical and theatrical figures.
