This collection contains William Jones material. The incoming correspondence, 1791-1827, is mainly addressed to Jones in his capacities as Secretary of the Navy, acting Secretary of the Treasury, and Second Bank of the United States president. It includes a small group of letters, 1813, mostly from Judge Joseph H. Nicholson of Baltimore, concerning Joshua Barney's duel with Lemuel Taylor. There are a few letters from family or mercantile business associates including Joshua and Samuel Humphreys. Among other William Jones papers are: a logbook, 1805-1806, kept by Jones as master of the ship Ploughboy; copies of U.S. Navy estimates for dimensions and equipment of ships of war; estate papers; newspaper clippings; and Smith's biographical notes. The collection includes other miscellaneous letters and genealogies of Smith's family. Clarke, Jones, Loxley and related lines are represented. There is a logbook kept by Lloyd Jones, 1797-1798, of two voyages made by the brig Benjamin Franklin between Philadelphia and Bordeaux. Uselma Clarke Smith's own papers are few: Pennsylvania Supreme Court Chief Justice George Sharswood letters, 1864-1871, concerning property settlement; letters and documents, 1868-1888, relative to the schooling of his son Robert M. Smith at Bordentown Military Institute; estate papers, 1863-1899, of Jane Loxley Clarke, Charlotte Jones Smith Goodrich, Catherine Loxley Jones, Mary P. Loxley, and others; law school notes; and miscellany.

Papers of Joseph Hopper Nicholson, a lawyer of Maryland, including conveyances, surveys, etc. relating to lands in Talbot, Queen Anne, and Kent counties, in vicinity of Wye, Centreville, and Chester River. Includes attested copy of will of Richard Sweatnam, 1697; enrollment of militia company, 1795; legal fee book, 1795, etc. The lands mentioned are Green Spring, Turners Ridge, Planters Increase, Paxton's Lot, Chesterfield (later Centreville), Bachelors Resolution, etc. the autographs include Mary Ward, Thomas Bucknell, John Bird, James Clayland, Jeffrey Mattashaw, John Howell, William Sweatnam, Joseph Nicholson, and Joseph Hopper Nicholson.

Title: Letters : concerning Thomas Jefferson, 1781-1828.

Thomas Jefferson writes a letter of introduction for James Monroe to someone in France, 1781; congratulates Monroe on the birth of a child and encloses a petition for him to sign, 1799; writes about the emperor, possibility of war in Europe, and the character of Mr. Franklin (in code), 1785. Joseph Nicholson writes to Monroe opposing Jefferson, believing the president has too much power and his foreign policy is wrong, 1808. Monroe writes to John Tyler thanking him for a copy of his eulogy of Jefferson, 1826; and to Thomas J. Randolph about 200 letters he has from Jefferson and offering to send a list, 1828.

Title: William and Catharine Nicholson Few papers, 1782-1844.

The collection consists of mainly of letters dated 1782-1844 which had been stitched together in groups. The letters were exchanged between William Few, his wife Catherine and their children. Catherine Few also wrote letters to her sister Maria Few Montgomery, her grandchildren and her friend, Harriett Woodward Murray. There are several letters to and from other family members. There is also a folder of letters written by Joseph Hopper Nicholson (1770-1817), cousin of Catherine Few, to Frances Few. Writings and a biographical sketch of William Few are included. Though these are essentially family letters describing such topics as children, health, social activities, local and foreign travel and weather, there is also commentary on political and military matters. Some of the letters of Joseph Nicholson mention his part in the War of 1812 bombardment of Fort McHenry in Maryland.

The collection contains a letter from Edmund Pendleton to James Mercer, 19 March 1776, concerning Sir Andrew Snape Hamond and Charles Lee, the Virginia Committee of Safety, the arming of slaves by Lord Dunmore, raids in Virginia by British navy ships, and the Battle of Moore's Creek Bridge (N.C.). George Washington writes (via Tench Tilghman) to the governors of seven colonies and officials in four other colonies on 31 January 1777 concerning desertions from the U.S. Continental Army. Also included are letters (1792-1795) by Edmund Randolph; a land grant (1788) from the Virginia Land Office to Samuel Woodson for 440 acres in Henry County, Va.; a printed act (1794) of the U.S. Congress concerning construction of a naval fleet to be sent to the coast of North Africa; and a letter (1801) from Elizabeth Nicholas Randolph to Jacob I. Cohen. There is also a letter from Thomas Jefferson to Joseph Hopper Nicholson, 7 December 1804, concerning the pension claims of Mrs. Ann Welsh of New London, Conn. Other Jefferson papers as President include clearance papers, and a grant for 100 acres of military bounty land in Ohio. There is a letter (1841) from Peter V. Daniel to Henry St. George Tucker; an 1845 deed for pew no. 14 in St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Richmond, Va.; a letter (1861) from Raleigh Travers Daniel concerning the Virginia militia; and a pass issued to Peter Vivian Daniel (1818-1889) by the Richmond, Fredericksburg and Potomac Railroad Company. Also included are passes (1861-1862) issued to Robert Findlater Williams by the Confederate States Army of South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida, Confederate States War. Dept., and the mayors of Charleston, S.C. and Savannah, Ga. There are also an affidavit (1777) of John Eede of Sussex, England concerning a deed; revenue stamps and seal of Horsham, Sussex, England; and a receipt (1827) for the purchase of two slaves.
