The collection also contains three baseball cards for female players that date from around 1885-1886 as well as boxing cards and color pictures of men representing different “race types” from Matthew Fontaine Maury’s . This collection contains the papers of August "Garry" Herrmann who was President of the Cincinnati Reds and Chairman of the National Commission during the years 1902-1927. Herrmann's papers consist of correspondence, newspaper articles, contracts, ledgers, maps, blueprints, drawings, and memorabilia which offer insight into the operations of an early twentieth-century baseball club and the first ruling government of baseball. Although Herrmann is regarded as a peacemaker and the father of the World Series, he is best remembered as a colorful and jovial baseball magnate. The papers of August "Garry" Herrmann is made up of two parts; Part I. Cincinnati Reds, and Part II. National Commission. Part I. contains all the material associated with Herrmann as President of the Cincinnati Reds, 1902-1927. Part II. consists of material related to Herrmann as Chairman of the National Commission, 1903-1920. The papers were arranged in this fashion due to the great difference in the functions of the two positions. In effect, the arrangement unveils the inner-workings of an early twentieth-century baseball team as well as the first ruling government of baseball, which allows the researcher to see more clearly the relationships between the two. This collection consists of correspondence, newspaper articles, contracts, maps, blueprints, and memorabilia. Nearly all of the correspondence in this collection was received by Herrmann as either President of the Cincinnati Reds or Chairman of the National Commission. When viewing correspondence grouped by teams and leagues, keep in mind that they were writing Herrmann and not each other. Arranging the material by team allows the information to be better connected. Most of the material is organized by name, position, organization/team/league, additional information, and date(s). Some of the folder numbers are followed with an "a" because the material was discovered after the final arrangement (for example, see Box 63, Folder 71a). Information contained within parentheses refers to subject matter in the particular correspondence. When "pl:" is located in parentheses, such as (pl: Cobb), this means that the writer of the correspondence is writing about a player with the last name of Cobb. This does not mean, however, that all the information is about that player, but that a portion of it is. The design of the finding aid is best researched if used in conjunction with a website search engine. However, when viewing this as a MS-Word file, a researcher can search the finding aid using the Find command located under Edit on the toolbar. Search the finding aid using last names, city of team, league names, and various subject terms such as "World Series," "World War I," "Sunday baseball," "Cuba," etc. Not all material associated with a particular player, manager, president, etc., is located in the same place. Material associated with a certain player may be located in multiple areas depending on what teams the player was representing at the time he was writing Herrmann or with what cases he was involved in either the National Commission or American and National Leagues. This arrangement decision was made because a straight alphabetical listing (by last name) could not show the relationships between player-manager-president-league-subject. When arranging material by league, team, player, etc., a researcher has the opportunity to find more on the subject by seeing like material in close proximity. For example, if a researcher wants information on Ty Cobb and the Detroit Tigers, search Cobb and it will bring you to the Detroit/AL section. Not only does one find correspondence from Cobb to Herrmann, but also material from Navin to Herrmann and players Dalton, Dauss, and Lowe each writing to Herrmann. Because Cobb was such a prominent player, he was probably mentioned in their correspondence to Herrmann. This information will only substantiate the information sought by a researcher.

Bradshaw Hall Swales (1875-1928) was an American anthropologist, ornithologist and collector of baseball artifacts. Collection consists of player rosters of various baseball leagues, files of individual player records, score cards, and other printed matter collected by Swales. Included are National League rosters, 1876-1930 (complete to 1926); International League rosters, 1886; Southern League rosters, 1885-1926; Pacific Coast League rosters, 1899-1926; Baseball Club rosters, 1871-1916; as well as rosters of American League, Western League, Northwestern League, American Association, Union Association, Players League (1890), and Federal League. Also, catalogs of records of individual players compiled by Swales; score cards; and newsclippings, pictures, pamphlets, and other printed materials.

Portraits of the players and managers appear with the article. On the reverse page Babe Ruth appears in a Feen-a-mint gum advertisement. The advertisement is in the form of a cartoon. The front page of the Sporting News and page 10 of the July 6, 1933 newspaper were encapsulated together.

Abraham Gilbert Mills (1844-1929) was a New Yorker who worked as Chief Clerk for the Supervising Architect of the U.S. Treasury Dept. and then entered the elevator business where he became a vice-president of the Otis Elevator Company. Mills, who was interested in amateur and professional sports, served as president of the National League of Professional Baseball Clubs from 1882 to 1884, was a supporter of the American Olympic movement, and was a member and officer of the New York Athletic Club. Having served in the Civil War, he became active in veterans organizations, particularly the Grand Army of the Republic. Collection consists of correspondence, diaries, artifacts, and printed matter documenting most aspects of Mills's life. Bulk of collection is personal and business correspondence, 1874-1929. There are two diaries, 1871-1872 and 1885, as well as letters, documents and clippings relating to the N.Y. Athletic Club, the Otis Elevator Co., baseball, the Adirondack League Club, and the Grand Army of the Republic. Also, news clippings, visual materials, artifacts, certificates, and printed ephemera.

A collection of correspondence, meeting minutes, official trips, litigation files, manuscripts, programs, tributes, audio and video recordings, scrapbook, photographs and artifacts all relating to the tenure of Bowie Kuhn as commissioner of Major League Baseball. Series I, Committees, is divided into two sub-series, providing excellent documentation of the organization and operation of Major League Baseball, especially through the Executive Council meeting minutes. Series II, Labor Issues, is divided into four sub-series, documents the evolution of the player-management relationship during Kuhn's tenure as Commissioner, including the Flood case. Series III, Major League Baseball Meetings, is divided into three sub-series, these papers primarily include minutes, itineraries and other documents related to the meetings. Series IV, Litigation and Television, is divided into three sub-series. Sub-series 1 primarily includes cases involving Major League owners and cases brought against Major League Baseball as a whole. Sub-Series 2 includes material about the negotiation of broadcasting contracts and proposals. Sub-Series 3 is documentation relating to the Finley lawsuit. Series V, Official Trips and Tours, includes itineraries, correspondence, programs and related documents. Trips include spring training, All-Star games, League Championship Series, World Series and trips to Japan, Mexico, Dominican Republic, England and others. Series VI, Administrative and Misc Commissioner Files, is divided into seven sub-series. This series documents both the operation of the office and its rulings. Of note is the Lieberman Reserch Report, files on the designated hitter, Winter Leagues and World Baseball Association. Series VII, Correspondence, is arranged chronologically and includes notebooks of outgoing correspondence and letters of congraturlation upon his election and re-election as Commissioner. Series VIII, Harball Material, contains research material, correspondence and manuscripts relating to Kuhn's book. Series IX, Scrapbook and Photographs, one scrapbook from his election in 1969 and a wide variety of photographs. Series X, Audio and Video Recordings, primarily interviews given by Kuhn. Series XI, Publications, Programs, Tributes, Stamps, Olympics, contents include annual reports, magazines, dinner programs, Olympic publications and a large stamp and First Day Cover collection.

Transcripts from the investigation of Earl Sutton Smith of the Pittsburgh Pirates. Smith was accused of assaulting David James Bancroft of the the Boston Braves. Smith's assault on Bancroft stemmed from a $100.00 fine Bancroft imposed on Smith for throwing furniture out of a window. This incident occurred while Smith was playing for Bancroft. Bancroft would not remit the fine after Smith left Bancroft's team. Barry McCormick and William J. Klem, the umpires, were interviewed about the incident. Bancroft, Judge Emil Fuchs, owner of the Braves, and John Heydler, President of the National League were a part of the proceedings as well.
