Summary: This is an extensive collection of materials from throughout New Mexican history. Series I consists of letters, prayer books, government and legal documents from 1709 to 1810, including a 1725 land conveyance by Bernardino de Sena at Santa Cruz de la Canada. Series II consists of letters, government and legal documents from 1821 to 1848. Includes two 1837 circulars concerning the Chimayo rebellion; documents involving Manuel Armijo and Father Antonio Jose Martinez; the first issue of "El Payo de Nuevo Mexico" from 1845, which is one of the earliest extant New Mexican newspapers; and several accounts of the 1847 Taos revolt. Series III consists of letters; wills; land conveyances and business, government, and legal documents from 1848 to 1912. Includes one 1856 letter and two 1858 letters by Archbishop Jean Lamy, and several letters and documents concerning Lieut. Col. Ethan W. Eaton of the United States Army. Series IV consists primarily of letters and legal documents from 1912 to 1949. Includes letters and documents concerning the activities of New Mexico Governor L. Bradford Prince, and a series of correspondence between R. Stocks Watson and Benjamin Read on New Mexican history.

Summary: Collection consists primarily of Alvarez's business, consular, and personal correspondence, 1825-1856. Correspondents include numerous officials, customers, merchants, and suppliers in New Mexico, St. Louis, New Orleans, New York, and London. Subjects discussed include the Santa Fe Trail, trade relations between the United States and New Mexico, and New Mexico politics and statehood. Items of note are five Alvarez ledgers (1834-1855), a journal of campsites along the Santa Fe Trail, a partial English copy of New Mexican Governor Albino Perez's tax laws (ca. 1837), a letter from New Mexican Governor Charles Bent (1847), and John Munroe's claim to the governorship of New Mexico (1850).

Summary: Collection consists of Donaciano Vigil's military, family, and personal papers which span the Spanish, Mexican, and Territorial periods of New Mexico history. The bulk of the collection covers the years, 1841-1877. Spanish period documents contain land conveyances and abstracts of land primarily in Santa Fe (1770-1803), an inventory of civil and criminal proceedings (1766-1767), and a will (1820). Mexican period documents cover a wide range of New Mexico subjects. Some of the subjects are Vigil's military career (1834-1841), military affairs including orders and accounts, legal affairs pertaining to civil and criminal offenses, land complaints, the Chimayo revolt (1837), the U.S. invasion of New Mexico (1846), the Santa Fe Trail, and extranjeros (foreign merchants). Included are two land complaints by Pecos Pueblo (1826) and Picuris Pueblo (1845). The Picuris Pueblo complaint involves the Santa Barbara Land Grant (1845). Territorial period documents contain: General Kearny's orders for the surrender of Mexican troops at Santa Fe, Taos, and San Miguel del Bado (1846); bills enacted by the New Mexico Legislature (1847-1848); and other political documents. Correspondence includes letters to and from Francisco Sarracino, Juan Andres Archuleta, and Manuel Armijo. Family papers include wills, business papers, land conveyances, citizenship papers, and a Pecos River water rights contract.

Summary: Collection consists of New Mexico historical documents, collected by Read, and Read's personal papers (1704-1926). Series I, indexed and described by Read, represents the bulk of the collection and roughly covers the fifty years between the last two decades of the Spanish colonial period and the first decade of the territroial period (1804-1854). This series is rich in the correspondence of Manuel Alvarez (1839-1850), a Santa Fe merchant who also served as U.S. Consul. Subjects reflected in Alvarez's correspondence with various New Mexico politicians and merchants are: military affairs including the Chimayo Rebellion (1837), the United States invasion of New Mexico (1846), and Indian relations; political affairs including relations with Texas, the assassination of Governor Charles Bent (1847), and the Gadsden Purchase; economic affairs including the Santa Fe Trail; and religious affairs including Padre Antonio Jose Martinez's involvement in politics and the Penitentes. Also included are official military, government, and religious documents. Series II consists of the papers of several New Mexico families, wills, estate records, World War I records, Manuel Alvarez's letterbook and diary, Padre Martinez's publications, and Read's private papers, manuscripts, and publications.

Summary: Collection consists of Twitchell's personal papers, typed manuscripts, and a broad range of original documents, translations, and photocopies on the history of New Mexico. Personal papers include correspondence with various individuals and materials from the 1908 National Irrigation Congress in Albuquerque. New Mexico historical documents include originals and photocopies from New Mexico's Spanish, Mexican, and territorial periods, as well as English translations of some documents in the official Spanish Archives of New Mexico. Among these documents are land conveyances, deeds, and titles; wills; estate records; and many government records. Also within the collection are papers of several New Mexico families. The papers of Colonel Jose Maria Chaves (1702- 1920; bulk, 1845-1851) primarily concern his command of the expeditionary force of volunteers of the Mexican militia during the Ute Campaign of 1845. Archuleta family papers (1747-1909) primarily concern land in Cuyamungue and Pojoaque. Ortiz family papers (1726-1841) primarily involve Matias Ortiz and include some materials concerning Manuel Armijo. Lente family papers (1764-1834) include correspondence about the family genealogy and documents recording land transactions in Valencia County near Isleta. Sena family papers (1781-1858) include land transactions and materials on the militia in San Miguel del Vado. Genealogical materials on the C de Baca, Chaves, and Delgado families are also in this collection.

Includes Guadalupe Miranda's 1839 appointment by Governor Manuel Armijo as Government Secretary of New Mexico, his 1841 commission from Mexican President Santa Anna as Militia Captain in New Mexico, and his 1843 appointment as acting Governor of New Mexico by acting Governor Juan Andres Archuleta while Archuleta led an expedition against Texas. Collection also includes land conveyances in southern New Mexico and Texas, documents concerning acequias in San Ignacio, New Mexico, and an 1868 quitclaim deed from Guadalupe Miranda to Lucien B. Maxwell pertaining to Miranda's interest in the Beubien-Miranda land grant.
