Donaciano Vigil collection, 1727-1877 (bulk, 1841-1877).

Summary: Collection consists of Donaciano Vigil's military, family, and personal papers which span the Spanish, Mexican, and Territorial periods of New Mexico history. The bulk of the collection covers the years, 1841-1877. Spanish period documents contain land conveyances and abstracts of land primarily in Santa Fe (1770-1803), an inventory of civil and criminal proceedings (1766-1767), and a will (1820). Mexican period documents cover a wide range of New Mexico subjects. Some of the subjects are Vigil's military career (1834-1841), military affairs including orders and accounts, legal affairs pertaining to civil and criminal offenses, land complaints, the Chimayo revolt (1837), the U.S. invasion of New Mexico (1846), the Santa Fe Trail, and extranjeros (foreign merchants). Included are two land complaints by Pecos Pueblo (1826) and Picuris Pueblo (1845). The Picuris Pueblo complaint involves the Santa Barbara Land Grant (1845). Territorial period documents contain: General Kearny's orders for the surrender of Mexican troops at Santa Fe, Taos, and San Miguel del Bado (1846); bills enacted by the New Mexico Legislature (1847-1848); and other political documents. Correspondence includes letters to and from Francisco Sarracino, Juan Andres Archuleta, and Manuel Armijo. Family papers include wills, business papers, land conveyances, citizenship papers, and a Pecos River water rights contract.
