William Gillet Ritch was territorial secretary of New Mexico from 1873 to 1885 and author of several books about New Mexico history. Ritch also served as acting territorial governor of New Mexico in 1875. He developed an interest in the history of New Mexico and collected historical documents in hopes of circumventing their destruction or dispersal. In 1880, he was elected as the first president of the New Mexico Historical Society.
