Creecy Family Papers, 1861-1865

Title: Creecy Family Papers, 1861-1865

The Creecy family of Pasquotank County, N.C., included Elizabeth Brosher Creecy Winston (1845-1921) and her parents, Mary B. Perkins and Richard Benbury Creecy (1813-1908). R. B. Creecy was a lawyer, journalist, author, farmer, and alumnus and trustee of the University of North Carolina. The collection is chiefly family letters addressed to Elizabeth Brosher Creecy (Winston). Thirty-six letters, 1861-1862, are to Elizabeth Creecy at St. Mary's School, Raleigh, N.C., from her parents, Richard Benbury Creecy (1813-1908) and Mary B. Perkins Creecy, in Nags Head, N.C., and Elizabeth City, N.C.; they give vivid accounts of life in an area under attack by the federal army and include parental advice and inquiries. Letters after 1862 are chiefly to Elizabeth from her friend, Kate Curtis, in Hillsborough, N.C., a daughter of clergyman and scientist Moses Ashley Curtis (1808-1872), concerning social life in Hillsborough; news of friends and relatives; war news; and daily events. There is one letter, August 1861, from Moses Ashley Curtis, commenting on New England Puritans and the current crisis. Other family letters, 1861-1867, are also included.

Papers chiefly concern land and estate settlements, mortgages, paying of notes, sale of land in Virginia and North Carolina, the business of the High Shoals Manufacturing Company, the Adams Mining and Reduction Company, and the King's Mountain Gold Mine. Also in the collection are letters, essays, and financial papers of Bynum's brother, John Gray Bynum (d. 1857), and John Gray Bynum's record book, April-June 1838, kept when he was serving as a colonel commanding North Carolina volunteers assisting in Cherokee removal in western North Carolina. Papers of the family of Moses Ashley Curtis include journals of Armand DeRosset Curtis (1839-1856) as a boy traveling with his father from North Carolina to Massachusetts in 1851 and to Charleston in an unknown year, as well as an account book and an unidentified volume that appear to have belonged to Moses Ashley Curtis. The addition of June 2002 includes additional material relating to legal matters, to the High Schoals Manufacturing Company, and to personal matters, as well as a few papers of Curtis A. Bynum.

Silas McDowell was a scientific farmer and writer of Franklin, Macon County, N.C. The collection includes papers of and about McDowell. Correspondence relates to his interests in mineralogy, geology, botany, zoology, and the history of western North Carolina. Correspondents include Moses Ashley Curtis, Lyman Draper, Asa Gray, David Lowry Swain, and Jarvis Van Buren. Some family papers, 1827-1895, also are included as are copies and drafts of articles and clippings and Gary S. Dunbar's research materials on McDowell.

Title: M.A. Curtis Papers, 1720-1952

Moses Ashley Curtis was born in Stockbridge, Mass., and educated at Williams College in Massachusetts. After graduating, he became a tutor for the children of former Governor Edward Bishop Dudley in Wilmington, N.C., returning to Massachusetts in 1833 to study theology. He married Mary de Rosset in 1834, was ordained in 1835, and obtained a post to teach at the Episcopal school at Raleigh, N.C. He became rector of the Protestant Episcopal Church at Hillsborough, N.C., in 1841 and in charge of a parish at Society Hill, S.C., in 1847 before returning to the Protestant Episcopal Church at Hillsborough in 1857. He died in Hillsborough, in 1872. Besides his clerical and teaching duties, Curtis was also a noted mycologist. The collection contains the correspondence, papers, journals and notebooks, and scientific materials of M.A. Curtis, along with the correspondence of his wife Mary Jane DeRosset Curtis, their children, and members of the Curtis and DeRosset families, chiefly in North Carolina and South Carolina. Correspondence primarily consists of early DeRosset papers; letters from M.A. Curtis's parents, Reverend Jared Curtis and Thankful Curtis, and his daughter, Caroline, to M.A. Curtis while at Williams College; correspondence between M.A. Curtis and Mary Jane DeRosset; letters from relatives of Mary Jane DeRosset Curtis of Wilmington, N.C., and Charleston, S.C.; letters from the Curtis childen while they were at school and as adults; letters from John H. Curtis while he was serving in the Confederate army; and scattered letters about activities of the Episcopal Church; letters to Curtis from other botanists, including Henry William Ravenel, Asa Gray, and M.J. Berkeley, primarily regarding fungi and related scientific topics. Topics are generally related to family news and daily life, along with some discussions of news and politics. Some letters mention slavery and particular slaves belonging to Curtis and DeRosset family members. Included is an 1841 letter discussing the trial of a man accused of murdering a slave, and letters, 1859-1860, discussing the dispersal of DeRosset family slaves after the death of Armand DeRosset. Later papers, 1873-1929, are family correspondence, papers relating to the disposition of Curtis's scientific materials, and letters from Catherine Fullerton describing her travels and teaching experiences in Cuba, 1910-1919. Also included are diaries, botanical notes, school notebooks, sermons, photographs, and church music, as well as Curtis's diary, 1830-1836 and undated, that contains descriptions of his life in Wilmington, N.C., and his employment as a tutor for the children of former Governor Edward Bishop Dudley.

Photocopies of letters, 1830s-1870s, to and from Moses Ashley Curtis, Episcopal priest, teacher, and noted mycologist, who lived in Wilmington, Raleigh, and Hillsborough, N.C., and Society Hill, S.C. These documents were collected by Edmund and Dorothy Smith Berkeley in preparation for their biography of Curtis, published in 1986 as and were gathered from repositories in the United States and Europe. Many of the letters are grouped together according to where the originals are housed. William Stevens Powell is an author, historian, and professor of history emeritus at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The collection includes correspondence, research materials, speeches, writings, and other papers relating to William Stevens Powell's professional activities and to North Carolina history. Title: Ruffin, Roulhac, and Hamilton Family, 1784-1951

Ruffin, Roulac, and Hamilton family members resided chiefly in eastern and central North Carolina, but also in Florida, Tennessee, and Alabama. Prominent among them were Thomas Ruffin (1787-1870), Anne M. Kirkland Ruffin (b. 1794), Joseph Blount Gregoire Roulhac (1795-1856), Catherine Ruffin Roulhac (b. 1810), and Daniel Heyward Hamilton, Jr. (b. 1838). The collection includes correspondence, financial and legal papers, account books, photographs, and other items, chiefly 1823-1890, relating to members of the Ruffin, Roulhac, and Hamilton families and their friends and associates. The papers relate to routine family matters and everyday life, and, to a lesser extent, to business matters, including the Ruffin plantations in North Carolina and Joseph Blount Gregoire Roulhac's career as a merchant in Raleigh, to the Civil War and Reconstruction, and to various public concerns. There are few items relating to Thomas Ruffin's legal and judicial career. The collection also contains photographs, carte-de-visite photographs, ambrotypes, daguerreotypes, tintypes, and sketches of members of the Ruffin and Roulhac families, friends, unidentified people, buildings, and Civil War naval engagements. There is also a mid-1850s daguerreotype of the sophomore class at the University of North Carolina, the earliest known image of a group of students at UNC.

William Chambers Coker was hired as the first Professor of Botany at the University of North Carolina in 1902. Thereafter Botany became a separate department and remained so until 1982, when it merged with the Department of Zoology to form the Department of Biology. The collection includes papers of, by, and about botanists, assembled circa 1902-1953 by Professor William Chambers Coker (1872-1953) and others of the Botany Department of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. This collection consists of 29 cabinet photographs of prominent 19th-century botanists, including Addison Brown, M.A. Curtis, Andrew Jackson Downing, William Russel Dudley, William Jackson Hooker, and Augustus B. Langlois. Cabinet photographs, measuring around 4 1/4 by 6 1/2 inches, were introduced by F.R. Window in 1867. The original photographs are undated, but the date of the original photograph may predate the date it was incorporated into a cabinet card.
