Collection contain business papers of Joseph Gales, Jr., and William W. Seaton, editors of the "National Intelligencer." Correspondence pertains to subscriptions, advertising, announcements and letters to the editors. Some prominent names appear in the subscription correspondence. Of particular interest are fifty-six transcripts of Congressional speeches, resolutions, and motions. These were presented for publication and are marked for editing. Among the authors of the manuscripts are Henry Clay, James K. Polk, Martin Van Buren, and Daniel Webster. Many are signed. Part of the Harry L. and Mary K. Dalton Collection.

In a letter to Martin Van Buren, 1829 April 30, Fendall resigns his position in the State Dept. and inquires why Van Buren described the request for his resignation as an "unpleasant duty" since he has fulfilled his office faithfully. In a letter to Joseph Gales, 1837 June 10, Fendall congratulates him on a public tribute, and comments that Washington is dull except for a "little animation ... it being the return day of the mandamus to the Postmaster General" [Amos Kendall who had refused to take a stand against Southern partisans removing "abolitionist propaganda" from the mail] and speculates on whether Kendall will be sent to jail. He also discusses a financial matter involving W.W. Seaton which concerns drafts at the Bank of the Metropolis, and mentions a legacy to the [American Colonization?] Society. In a letter, 1838 December 20, the law book publishing firm of Nicklin & Johnson sends Fendall a price list of legal titles. In a letter, 1845 July 8, the firm of Wiley & Putnam responds to Fendall's requests for subscription prices to the London Quarterly Review and the Edinburgh Review. In a letter, 1853 March, William W. Seaton, brother-in-law and business partner of Joseph Gales, responds to a request from Jefferson Davis, on rules of precedence for official calls in Washington, D.C.

In a letter, 1829 March 24th, Portsmouth, Mary M. Warren writes to George Blow, Jr., of Hampden Sidney, sending news of family, home and friends. She comments on her successful suit for an inheritance and bad weather preventing her attending the inauguration of Andrew Jackson. In a letter, 1829 August 12, Greenville, Samuel Finley writes to Major John Finley about the approaching death of his wife Mary, her journey home, the friends who have called and his trust in God. In a letter 1847 March 22, Fort Monroe, Enoch F. Vowles writes to Silvester Emerson describing the small pox at Fort Monroe and conveying news he has heard about the Mexican War. In a letter, 1852 July 20, Alexander H.H. Stuart writes to Col. W.W. Seaton inquiring whether James Madison ever offered [Winfield?] Scott a seat in his cabinet.

This collection consists of 48 indentures, or property agreements. Most of the documents have the term "indenture" appearing in the first sentence, although they are variously described by city officials in the agreements themselves as deeds, bills of sale, leases, and agreements. They contain the required signatures of the partners to the agreements and of city officials such as justices of peace and the clerk of the circuit court, but only two of them have any seals. In other cases circles are drawn for the placement of seals, but they are not present. They concern property of several types: real estate, household goods, chattel and slaves. The dating and signing by William Brent is the one element common to all pieces in the collection; this recording was the last step for property transactions; the clerk's date was always the latest one found on each agreement.
