Edgar Kaufmann, Jr. (1910-1989) was an American industrial designer, architect and artist. He apprenticed with Frank Lloyd Wright (1933-1934) and his father, Edgar Kaufmann, Sr., commissioned Fallingwater from noted architect Frank Lloyd Wright in 1936. Among his other accomplishments, he was director of the industrial design department at the Museum of Modern Art (1946-1955) and worked to encourage uniform standards for industrial design education.
[Portions of this biographical sketch adapted from information found in the "People" section of the Industrial Design Society of America's website, http://www.idsa.org .]
The Kaufmann Industrial Design Award was administered by the Institute of International Education and sponsored by the Edgar Kaufmann Foundation to give public recognition to accomplishments in all fields of design and to encourage enterprising design developments. The award was discontinued in 1967.

Title:
Edgar J. Kaufmann Charitable Trust records, 1936-1987 [manuscript]
The Edgar J. Kaufmann Charitable Foundation records are housed in twenty archival boxes and are arranged into three series. Series have been designated for administrative materials, grant files, and personal papers. These records include correspondence, meeting minutes, financial materials, various grant proposals, and other sundry items. These records provide comprehensive information on a variety of topics both locally and nationally including cultural and civic development, arts and education and general social welfare work. The early Charitable Trust records are limited and primarily document donations given to charitable causes in Pittsburgh while the Charitable Foundation records are more comprehensive and document donations given internationally. The administrative records detail the operation and organization of the Foundation while the grant files document the size of each donation and usually detail information about the organizations receiving support. The personal papers include some papers from Edgar Kaufmann, Jr., but primarily consist of the papers of Oliver M. Kaufmann and would serve as a good source for those studying his involvement with the international business community and his charitable work including the Y-IKC and Montefiore Hospital.

Title:
Peter Blake architectural records and papers, 1910-2006 (bulk 1980-2002).
This collection contains materials related to a full range of Blake's personal, professional, and academic lives. The bulk of the collection dates from the 1980s through the early 2000s. His professional and faculty papers document many of his interests, and primarily include published and unpublished lectures and articles. Although Blake delivered his lectures at various architectural schools in the United States and abroad, the specific locations of the lectures are not usually recorded on the documents. In addition, many articles he wrote for publication appear as annotated typescripts. There are also significant papers related to publication of his memoir No Place Like Utopia (Knopf, 1993), including correspondence and some production records. Throughout the professional and faculty papers are also found a large number of reference files relating to modern architecture, art, design, urbanism, technology, and current events, compiled over many decades. The collection also contains correspondence with personal friends, clients, and professional and academic colleagues. There is an especially significant amount of correspondence and clippings related to Patwant Singh, a Sikh writer, commentator, journalist, editor, and publisher, with whom Blake was a close friend. There are also many materials including correspondence, typescripts, and book production records related to Philip Johnson and Paul Rudolph, with whom Blake was also close. Architectural project records include original and reprographic drawings and photographs for 40 residential and institutional designs, located primarily in New York City and the surrounding region. Of particular note are drawings and papers related to Blake's important Pin Wheel House (1954) in Water Mill, New York. In addition, there are drawings related to the American National Exhibition in Moscow (1959). Finally, there is a significant number of drawings, photographs, and correspondence related to the Benjamin Gerson Residence (1999-2003) in Johnsonburg, New Jersey, one of Blake's last architectural projects.
