Kaufmann's was founded in 1871 in Birmingham, now Pittsburgh's South Side. They moved to the North Side and then to their present location on Smithfield Street between Fifth and Forbes Avenues. In 1946, they joined the May Company and as of 2003, remain a regional division of May with stores in Pennsylvania, Ohio and New York. The collection is divided into three parts: Kaufmann's, May Department Stores and miscellaneous. The collection includes images of advertising, anniversaries, buildings, the clock, departments, employees, expansion, the Kaufmann family, etc. The images provide insight into the Kaufmann family and business.
