Wrote that he needed information concerning the seminary: "I need much a statement of the curriculum of Greenville Seminary. I am asked every day what will be the precise course of study. And so your church has called T.G.I. [Broadus was succeeded by Abram Burwell Brown]. Well, should he accept, it may be better for the church than the choice I had made for them. My work moves slowly, much opposition. Have not got beyond $8000. But I am still hoping, and struggling. Boyce telegraphs that he will pass here tonight. I shall meet him at the depot and go with him to Agnia Creek."

Wrote about the church he pastored: "Our meetings are still quite interesting, though we are not now adding any white persons to the church. Our house is literally filled twice every Lord's day--and our Thursday night lectures are well attended. The number baptized in all is 85, of whom more than half are colored. We have raised our church building fund to $9,000; and would now be building, but for the fact that we met with difficulty in making a contract. We have adopted a plan, and have determined to venture as high as $12,000 but as yet we have not rec'd a bid less than $14,000."

William had read "in the Dispatch" that John was "in Richmond, preaching for Dr. Jeter. If this be true, I hope it is only for a day or two. We need you here very much." Revival was occurring in the Fredericksburg church. "I think you owe me a visit, among the first you owe to any one. Tiberius Jones is to lecture here Wednesday night and I would like to begin a meeting Thursday night with you here to help." Broadus left a revival in progress in his own church, to conduct meetings from Nov. 30 to Dec. 10, 1857, in Grace Street Church, Richmond, which Jeter pastored. Subsequently, he was summoned back to Charlottesville to continue the meetings there, and was unable to go to Fredericksburg.

William excused himself from going to Charlottesville to preach for John: "I am in a meeting here Thursday night and the school is on hand, and I am suffering tortures with hemorrhoids and many other things prevent. Accept the will for the deed." In closing, he sends "love to the little children and Julia Somers." John's wife had died in Oct. and Julia Somers probably was part of the arrangements to care for Broadus's three small daughters, Eliza, 7; Annie, 3; and Maria, 19 months.

Sept. 26. William wrote to ask John to preach in a series of meetings at his church: "Our congregation greatly needs such help as I think with the Master's blessing, you could give us. I should hope you would have fruit from a week's labor here. What think you of Spurgeon or 'the modern Whitfield'? [Folder 1/20] -- Oct. 1: William Changed the date for the series of meetings he wanted his nephew to preach: "did I write October? I meant to write November, Monday night after 1st Lord's day in Nov. is the time I wish you to be here [Folder 1/20]. Oct. 17. William writes again about "our meeting, that nothing may take you by surprise. We observe the 'concert' and 1st Monday contributions here. Your first sermon then, may partake of a missionary cast. Let me suggest a nose [sic] for it. 'The importance of blessing others, if we would expect ourselves to be blessed.' I do not know that I could make much of a sermon on this topick [sic], but I should hope you could [Folder 1/20]."- Nov. 4. Maria C. Broadus complained "I can't tell you how I am to pass through so many days without your advice and still more the comfort of your presence. I never missed you more--indeed it seems almost as if I had never missed you before--there are so many things I want to ask you about." She described her problems as a teacher. [Folder 1/21]."- Nov. 6. Maria wrote: "There are so many things I want to say to you that I must write a few lines even if it is almost ten o'clock ... Please don't think teaching is such a heavy burden to me. I believe I would be fond of it, were it not for arithmetic [folder 1/21]."--Nov. 7. "I think Lida [daughter Eliza Somerville Broadus] is very slow about learning to read, but hope she will be able to accomplish that task in the course of time. Oh, how glad I am that this week is almost over and that the time for your return is growing a little nearer. You talk about trials Mr. Broadus. Let me tell you that they seem like trifles compared with the great sacrifice I make of my own enjoyment every time that we have to be separated [folder 1/21]." Nov. 17. William wrote: "Our meeting closed last night. Bro. [J.R.?] Bagby did not arrive until Tuesday, and when he came, he was very sick. He preached Tuesday night, and then took his bed. On Wednesday night, I had to preach. Thursday, Bro. B. had recovered, and from that time, he preached every night and yesterday, twice. We kept our P.M. prayer meeting to the last. I baptized Friday night, 6 [folder 1/21]."

Wrote "We are in great anxiety about our boys. they are in Braxton's Fredg. Artillery. Have you heard from them? Or can you hear? The papers distract us with conflicting statements." The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary closed and John A. Broadus spent much of the Civil War years preaching in Confederate Army camps and hospitals. In July, 1863, he was in Winchester, Va. (Camp 13th Va. Inf.).

John's uncle had wanted him to come to Fredericksburg to preach in a protracted meeting in the church he pastored there. Instead John had left a revival already beginning in his own church in Charlottesville, Va. to preach in a series of meetings, Nov. 30-Dec. 1, in Grace Street Baptist Church in Richmond, pastored by J.B. Jeter. Now William wrote: "I forgive your going to Richmond rather than Fredg. provided you hold yourself in readiness to spend a week here beginning when the moon is 7 days old in March next." He reported the results of the series of meetings in his own church, which was led by Dr. Kingsford. "Nine have been baptized and many others are in a promising state."

Sept. 8. William F. Broaddus described a teaching and preaching position he was offering Whitescarver in Fredericksburg, Va. [Folder 1/16]. Sept. 18. Whitescarver explained his indecision concerning Broaddus's offer."The great matter is, ought I to leave the church for such considerations. There is nothing special that I am aware of, but it is a crisis with them and to have to look now for a pastor would be a drawback [Folder 1/16]" Sept. 23. Broaddus wrote that "W.A.W. has decided against my proposition. I think he has decided unwisely [folder 1/16]." Nov. 6. Broaddus asks John to "keep it before Wm. Whitescarver that the vacency in our Fredg. church school and school church is still open. Can you be my confidant and pump him? [Folder 1/17]."

He wrote that they had "put our church under contract, as you will see from the Herald. Tell Bro. [William P.] Farish we should not think it unlike him if he should send a check for a hundred or so, to help pay for it. I know he has many calls, but when a man gets used to anything, he finds it easy to keep on at it."

Broaddus wrote that he was truly gratified to hear that "you are giving your time to the work of the ministry." Complains that "your Father" who is "my eldest brother, whom I have always sincerely loved," has not written since January 1847. "Once I attempted a correspondence with you; but you dropped it suddenly. Madison and Martha also both failed to respond to my letters. Meanwhile, your excellent mother died, and not one of the family ever wrote me a line and to this day, I am totally ignorant of the particulars of her death." Says his own ministry in Kentucky has "not been much blessed." "Your uncle Andrew has rec'd a call to Virginia and will probably accept."

Broaddus was visiting him, and would be available to preach to Broadus's church at Charlottesville, Taylor wrote requesting John to supply preach for him. "As I have to preach three times on Sabbath and am suffering somewhat with my throat, I write to beg you to 'come over and help me' on that day. Please say to Elder Wm. F. Broaddus that I hope he will come here from Charlottesville. I will pledge him several subscriptions for the Theological School. Let me hear from you both if you can't come."

He proceeded to tell his nephew of the death of his own son, Crawford, of cholera, on August 10, of the same year. Mentions his brother Andrew and "our only surviving sister, Lucy Ferguson, Taylorsville, Ill.

These papers contain letters to William H. Whitsitt and other items dealing almost entirely with the so-called Whitsitt controversy of 1896-1899 among Southern Baptists. The Whitsitt papers contain letters from theologians, educators, Baptist clergymen and laymen in all parts of the country. Especially interesting are Whitsitt's annotations of the letters. The papers are valuable not only as a chronicle of the Whitsitt controversy but also as a source of information on the affairs of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary during his presidency. The Whitsitt Papers also contain interesting information concerning the tradition that George Washington was immersed by the Rev. John Gano.

I have abandoned the school, and nothing now remains in order to accept the Agency [for the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary], but to get a pastor pro tem."

Concerning efforts to raise funds for the newly formed Southern Baptist Theological Seminary: "Boyce goes up Saturday. Be sure to get him a good subscription in C[harlottesville]."
