These notes were used to write Volumes IX and X, "Labor Movement, 1860-1880", of Documentary History of Industrial Democracy. Most of the notes were compiled from labor newspapers, interviews with former union members, and secondary sources. They reflect the organizing efforts and concerns of the early unions. Other materials include a Ph.D. exam given to Andrews and Helen Sumner (1908), newspaper articles, outlines, and correspondence.

Some of the correspondence is personal but much concerns her professional activities and her interest in liberal and socialist causes. Correspondents include her teacher, John R. Papers of a husband and wife team of economists who were important in the drafting and enactment of the Wisconsin Unemployment Compensation law. In addition, Paul Raushenbush (1898-1980) was head of the Wisconsin Unemployment Division from 1934 to 1967 and Elizabeth Brandeis Raushenbush (1896-1984) was a professor of economics at the University of Wisconsin and a leader in the Wisconsin League of Women Voters. Her papers document teaching at the University of Wisconsin, activities in the League of Women Voters (especially its Wisconsin Tax Study Committee) and the American Federation of Teachers Local 223, extensive public speaking and writing on labor-related topics, and service on various state and federal study committees. Included are Paul's general correspondence, speeches and writings (including an edited oral history published as "Our U.C. Story"), and unemployment compensation materials (1932-1934) not related to administration of the Wisconsin Unemployment Division. Papers include personal and professional correspondence, his M.A. thesis (U.W., 1906), his "La Follette's Magazine" editorials (unsigned), his college scrapbook, as well as "Frederick MacKenzie, An Appreciation" by Suzanne La Follette (privately printed by Nellie MacKenzie, 1928) and photographs of MacKenzie and his wife Nellie. This collection contains (through 2003) almost 400 files (some containing more than one folder), most pertaining to individuals, the remainder to organizations, events and topics. While most of the individuals were active in the United States, there are also files for a number of prominent European figures. Future additions to this collection, i.e., manuscript files received from 2004 onward, will be placed in an addendum, and this guide will be periodically updated to reflect these additions.

Professional and personal correspondence, diaries, photographs, speeches, articles, book drafts, and other writings, biographical materials, clippings, and trade union files of William M. Leiserson, labor economist, teacher, and arbitrator, who served on a number of state and national unemployment and labor relations boards. He also taught at Antioch College, 1926-1933, and did research in labor relations for the Twentieth Century Fund in the 1930s and 1940s. Particularly well documented is Leiserson's work as arbitrator for the clothing industry in the 1920s and his guidance in enactment of Ohio's unemployment law in the 1930s. While heading the National Mediation Board and serving as a member of the National Labor Relations Board, Leiserson provided expert opinion to Presidents Roosevelt and Truman and members of Congress. In the trade union files are materials gathered from numerous unions in the 1940s for Leiserson's study of trade union government. The extensive correspondence includes frequently detailed letters from Leiserson to union leaders, economists, and government officials. Among the most informative letters are those exchanged with longtime friends such as John R. Commons, Edwin E. Witte, Selig Perlman, David Saposs, Max Otto, Louis Stark of the New York Times, John A. Fitch of the New York School of Social Work, and poet Carl Sandburg. The photographs include images of Leiserson, his family, and colleagues. Also present are images of meetings and commissions with which Leiserson was involved.

Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America. Sidney Hillman papers, 1930-1946 (bulk 1935-1945)

Title: Sidney Hillman papers

Papers documenting Sidney Hillman's activities as the ACWA's president during the Depression, New Deal, and war years, as well as his work with the NRA, the National Defense Advisory Commission, and the War Production Board. Sidney Hillman and the ACWA played crucial roles in founding the CIO. Hillman's correspondence with Walter Reuther and George Addes of the United Automobile Workers (UAW) and Emil Rieve of the Textile Workers' Organizing Committee reflects that effort. The Roosevelt era brought both increased visibility and power to Hillman and the union. In 1933, Hillman was chosen to serve on the National Recovery Administration's Labor Advisory Board. The materials from this NRA period describe the Roosevelt administration's attempts to draw up codes of fair competition to determine production quotas and fix wages and hours in order to bring about economic recovery. The NRA records also contain Hillman's correspondence with government officials as well as leaders of labor unions and of private firms. There are also some reports and raw data used by the NRA in developing its codes. In 1940, as U.S. involvement in World War II became increasingly likely, Roosevelt organized the National Defense Advisory Commission (NDAC) to coordinate economic mobilization for the war. Hillman was named to the Commission; later he was tapped to be associate director of the War Production Board. The NDAC materials in this collection document Hillman's experiences and include correspondence with William Knudsen. There are also some reports and directives prepared by the War Production Board. Other notable topics include: aid to free labor organizations in Europe during World War II; anti-fascist efforts by U.S.labor organizations; civil rights; the clothing trade in the U.S. and Canada; economic conditions during the depression, particularly in the U.S. garment industry; international labor activities; Jewish workers in Palestine; labor organizing in the U.S. and Canada; relations with other unions; the Spanish Civil War, including labor aid to and participation in the Republican cause; union involvement in politics and government in the U.S.; the role of women and minorities in the labor movement; and worker education.
