[13 diplomatic letters to Laurence Hyde, 1st earl of Rochester], 1701 Jul. 15 - Nov. 7.
Manuscript, in a single hand, of 13 drafts of diplomatic letters from Blathwayt to Hyde. 12 were written from Holland when Blathwayte was secretary of state to William III, in which discusses his intention of keeping Lord Rochester informed of events during his attendance on the King. Other subjects include John Churchill, 1st duke of Marlborough, the Treaty of Alliance, the plot in Ireland, reinforcement of Leeward Islands, and the feasibility of additional regiments for Ireland and Jamaica. In one letter, for example, he writes, "although your Lordship mentions these Regts to be for the W. Indies yet in the computation they are said to be designed for Jamaica, for the Leeward Islands where the Warr has always hitherto broke out to our disadvantage for the want of some standing force."

Manuscript on paper, in a single hand, consisting of aphorisms, axioms, and pithy commentary on such subjects as "Wisdom, "Money," "Retalliation," and "Parliament." Concerning "Popery," the author writes, "We charge the prelaticall clergy with the popery to make them odious tho we know they are guilty of no such thing. Just as heretofore they called Images Mammetts and the adoration of Images Mammetry, that is Mahomet & Mahometry odious names, when all the world knows the Turks are forbidden Images by their Religion."

Title:
Journal of our journey. 1723.
Manuscript journal of Edward Southwell's summer 1723 travels in the Netherlands. Most of the text is a narrative diary of the places and people Southwell visited and includes mention of various churches and works of art that he was able to see. There are also some accounts and, at the end of the volume, a list simply showing the places visited on this trip by date, which provides a sort of index to the narrative section of the journal. Places described in more detail include Bruges, Ghent and Antwerp.
