The letters discuss Hawkins' compiling and writing a history of the 5th Kentucky Infantry, Confederate States Army, which Hawkins commanded during the Civil War. Also included are notes and manuscript on the history of the unit as well as a 261 page ledger listing members of Civil War units, primarily Union, by name, rank, and current address (1902). The ledger lists both black and white units. Names represented are Ed Porter Thompson, W.L. Jett, and J.M. Warmack.

Evans, a client seeking a veterans' bounty. Evans had served in Company "K" of the 14th Kentucky Volunteers (U.S. Army). The other letter by Captain David W. Steele concerned receipt of officers' commissions and a name change for Steele's militia unit in Jessamine County, Kentucky.

These are various records regarding many of the volunteer units from Kentucky which served with Union forces during the Civil War. Included are an order book containing orders from Adjutant General John Finnell to the Kentucky Volunteer Militia (State Guard); an unbound order book with special and general orders signed by various officers; a special order book and morning report book for the Sixth Kentucky Volunteer Infantry; and a clothing book for the Fourteenth Kentucky Volunteer Infantry. Also available are rosters for the First, Second, Third, Fourth, Eighth, Ninth, Eleventh, Fifteenth, Eighteenth, and Twenty-Sixth Volunteer units; and handwritten casualty sheets with lists of soldiers who were killed, missing, in the hospital, had been discharged, or had deserted.
