Historical note: In 1860 the Kentucky Militia was replaced by the Kentucky State Guard. During the Civil War the State Guard suffered from the same divided loyalties which were indicative of Kentucky as a whole. It was reestablished in 1878, with the primary focus on controlling civil disturbances including feuds, riots, strikes, and lynchings. In 1912 the State Guard became the Kentucky National Guard. Josiah Stoddard Johnston, lawyer, journalist, and political figure was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, on Feb. 10, 1833. After the death of his parents, Johnston moved with his brothers to Kentucky to live with relatives.
