George Breitman was born in Newark, New Jersey in 1916. After working in the Civilian Conservation Corps, and the Works Progress Administration, he joined the Trotskyist movement and became a founding member of the Socialist Workers Party (SWP) in 1938. He edited and served in World War II. In the 1960s, Breitman assumed responsibility for the SWP's Pathfinder Press and edited , and wrote (1965). Bert Cochran (1916-1984) was a Trotskyist active in the Communist League of America (1934), the American Workers Party (1935-37), in the Appeal Group within the Socialist Party, and in the automobile industry (1930s-40s), first in Cleveland within the Mechanics Educational Society of America, then in Detroit as head of the Socialist Workers Party Auto Fraction and as an activist within the United Automobile Workers of America. He left/was expelled from the SWP in 1954 for his leading role in the “Cochran-Clarke” faction, then helped found the magazine (1954-1959), and subsequently wrote seven books that covered labor and economics, and current domestic and international affairs. The collection contains correspondence, minutes, and reports relating to his labor and political activities, typescripts of speeches on various topics, and an (incomplete) untitled manuscript, a Marxist history of warfare and society. Campaign literature, scrapbooks, form letters, bulletins, issues of party newspapers, pamphlets, and other materials generated or collected by the Socialist Workers Party, which was organized formally in 1938 to represent the Trotskyite branch of the American Communist Party. Most of the materials emanated from Socialist Workers party headquarters in New York City, although there are also items from Communist groups abroad and a small file (1962-1964) created by the Minnesota branch.

Guide to the Max Shachtman Papers, 1917-1969

Title: Guide to the Max Shachtman Papers, 1917-1969

Max Shachtman was an author, editor, and a leader (successively) in the communist, Trotskyist, and socialist movements whose views helped shape the outlook of many progressive and liberal anti-communist intellectuals and labor leaders. Shachtman was a Polish-Jewish immigrant interested in socialist reform and the communist movement, but in 1928, was expelled from the Communist Party after adopting Trotsky's views. In 1929 he became a leader of the Communist League of America and lead a splinter group, the Workers Party (later the Independent Socialist League) who had differences with the party establishment's uncritical view of the Hitler-Stalin Pact of 1939. During the 1950s, Shachtman developed the political strategy known as 'realignment,' which held that U.S. socialists should ally themselves with the leadership of the labor movement and together work to make the Democratic Party into a social democratic party. During the 1960s, Shachtman began a history of the Communist International, which remained unfinished at his death in 1972. The papers include international organizational bulletins, correspondence, notes, clippings, cartoons, lithographs and manuscripts, documenting both his political and literary activities. Also included are research notes for his history of the Communist International, personal correspondence, an unpublished manuscript of Alfred Rosmer's memoirs of John Reed and a collection of German leaflets tracing the debate between the Nazis, the Communist Party, the Social Democrats and the German Trotskyists. Prominent correspondents include Norman Thomas, Natalia Sedova Trotsky, Erich Fromm, A.J. Muste and Max Eastman.
