Ohio Company (1747-1779). Records of the Ohio Company, 1736-1813 [electronic resource].

Manuscripts used by George Mercer to prepare his Case of the Ohio Company, which documented the Company's actions in the Ohio territory are the highlight of the collection. The Case of the Ohio Company was published by George Mercer in 1769 in pamphlet form, but the manuscript copy of the Case in this collection is distinct from the published version in many respects. For a thorough critique of the difference, see Mulkearn's George Mercer Papers. This collection includes the only known manuscript copy of the Case of the Ohio Company . The journals kept by Christopher Gist, recorded during his two scouting missions into the Ohio territory in the 1750s as a field agent of the company, are part of both the published Case reproduced in Mulkearn's book, and the manuscript Case in this collection. The collection includes two manuscript copies of the diary used by William M. Darlington to publish his 1893 book on the subject. The collection also includes debt notes and correspondence related to business conducted by the Ohio Company in Virginia, Maryland and eastern Pennsylvania. The notes include the name and residence of the debtor and the debt holder, the date that the debt was entered into the public record through the county clerk, and the amount. These materials are often annotated to document subsequent legal action, most commonly, the passage of the debt to a third party. In the contents list, accounts indicate an itemized list of goods for which a debt is owed, and a debt or more informal promise to repay simply document an amount. Also present are materials related to various legal cases brought against debtors. Full names are given when present and legible, and bracketed items indicate that the name was difficult to read. The interpretation of spelling may be incorrect because many of the names are the result of non-standardized spelling. Additionally, page numbers in brackets indicate the location of the transcription in Mulkearn's George Mercer Papers (example: LM p237 indicates that this document is transcribed on page 237 of Lois Mulkearn's book.)

Papers collected by Lyman Draper when he was planning to publish an enlarged and revised edition of Joseph Doddridge's "Notes on the Settlements and Indian Wars of the Western Parts of Virginia and Pennsylvania, 1763-1783." The major topics of discussion center around the development of the region and the American Revolution. Major battles include Dunmore's Expedition, 1774; the Battle of Point Pleasant, 1774; and skirmishes in Valley Forge and Pennsylvania. Defense and relationships with the Shawnee and Cherokee are discussed throughout the various military and family papers. The collection also contains information on many prominent families in the region; major figures include Joseph Doddridge and his family, William Fleming, William Christian, John Stuart, Patrick Henry, William Preston, Thomas Madison, Daniel Smith, John Evan Finley, and Joseph Martin.

Is sorry to hear of Page's illness. Agrees with Page that military matters should take precedence over governmental, and that the country should be better prepared for war. Wishes Portsmouth and Norfolk [Va.] shipbuilding could be made impregnable by fortifying them with cannons as Gen[eral] [Adam] Stephen has advised. Asks Page to recommend "the most vigorous attention to the cannon foundry on Jamestown [Island]." Hopes the powder mills and salt petre works are not neglected. Relates the U.S. forces beat the enemy the last five times out of six. "Our army is in good spirits and do not wish to avoid a general engagement."

Dinwiddie sent money to Stephen via Captain Cocks of Winchester, Virginia and is now low on cash. The provisions to be sent in April are better than customary. Lt. Mercer will stay in "lower country" to recruit troops for two Irish regiments daily expected. Dinwiddie sends beef and pork to supplement the supplies at Will's Creek. Mr. Mercer left the accounts with clerk of the Committee.

Richard Henry Lee Papers, 1763-1823

Title: Richard Henry Lee Papers 1763-1823

A politician and arch revolutionary, Richard Henry Lee was an impassioned supporter of American independence from the mid-1760s. Born into one of the most prominent families in the colony on January 20, 1732, Lee was bred to a political life, serving in the Virginia House of Burgesses during the Stamp Act and Non-importation crises, helping convey his state into the revolutionary camp. As a delegate to the Continental Congress, Lee was the first to officially move that a declaration of independence be drafted, and he ended his public career as a principled opponent of ratification of the Constitution and as Virginia's first U.S. Senator. He died at home in Virginia in June 1794. A small, but highly valuable collection, the papers of Richard Henry Lee document the political life and activities of one of the most ardent revolutionaries in Virginia. The 0.5 linear feet of letters (193 items), most addressed to Lee, are an important resource for study of pre-Revolutionary political agitation in Virginia, the increasing connections forged between the colonies, and the political course of the war. To a lesser degree the collection documents Lee's late-life anti-federalism. Among the major correspondents are Lee's brothers Arthur and William, and such leaders in the revolutionary cause as George Washington, Samuel Adams, Charles Lee, John Adams, and Thomas Paine.
