Farmer; imprisoned and released during the Revolutionary War and after the war was selected for Episcopal consecration which he received in Scotland from the Non-juring Scottish prelates (the English Anglican clergy did not think they could perform this ceremony); returned to America as rector of St. James Church, New London and Bishop of Connecticut until his death.

Chase, Philander, 1775-1852. Philander Chase papers, 1808-1876.
Title:
Philander Chase papers, 1808-1876.
The collection consists of correspondence by and about this influential leader of the Low Church party. Early correspondence is primarily with Bishops Thomas John Claggett and James Kemp, of Maryland, and subjects include affairs of Bishop Samuel Seabury; publication of Seabury's sermons; Chase's election as Bishop of Ohio, 1818; and a controversy with Bishop John H. Hobart. Many letters concern Chase's controversial fund-raising visit to England, his dealings with Lord Kenyon, and his success there, 1823-1824. There is much material on the founding and history of Kenyon College, Gambier, Ohio. Later correspondence is chiefly with Bishop William Rollinson Whittingham of Maryland, and covers a multitude of issues and events. Among these are Chase's transfer to the Diocese of Illinois, 1835; the affairs of that Diocese; Chase's activities as Presiding Bishop, including strong criticism of his use of the powers of that office and his continuing interest in education; there is material about Jubilee College, Illinois, which he founded, and other projects. Much concerns relations with other bishops, especially Benjamin T. Onderdonk, George W. Doane, George Upfold, and Charles P. McIlvaine, as well as many other clergymen. Letters relate to business of the House of Bishops and General Conventions of the Episcopal Church, changes in canon law, innovations in ritual, and similar matters. Chase's worldwide interests are reflected in noteworthy papers regarding the Eastern Orthodox Churches and relations with the Church of England, in which Chase was accused of exceeding his authority. Included are his commission for Bishop Horatio Southgate as emissary to the Orthodox Church in the Ottoman Empire, 1845, and letters about missions in Greece and Turkey. There are also references to establishment of the Episcopal Church in the Republic of Texas, 1843. Several items contain evaluations of the Chase's work and character by others, both before and after his death.

Bishop Samuel Seabury letter, 1795 January 10, to Reverend Abraham Jarvis, Middletown, Conn.
Writing from New London, Connecticut, Bishop Seabury mentioned his improved health, and asked Jarvis if he were going to honor the President's order for a day of Thanksgiving for the day after Ash Wednesday. Seabury also discussed a Freemason sermon he had written and asked when and where the next meeting of the Grand Lodge was to be held. Finally, he commented how people in the United States know they will go to heaven simply by hearing sermons and how a person's goodness was estimated by the number of sermons an individual heard.

Five manuscripts pertain to Bishop Seabury: his certificates of ordination for the Reverend William Duke as deacon and priest, 1785; his signature to Bishop Thomas John Claggett's certificate of consecration as Bishop of Maryland, 1792; and two letters to Bishop Claggett, 1793 and 1794, concerning several clergymen, including William Green and Walter C. Gardiner. Most of the remaining items are references to Seabury by others: defense of the validity of his consecration, posthumous publication of his sermons; Bishop Horatio Southgate's publication in Constantinople of an Armenian translation of Seabury's sermon on Christian unity (1845-1846); Seabury's views on confirmation; praise for his sound theology; and the use of Seabury's concordat with the Scottish Church as a model for agreement between the Episcopal Church and the Church of Jesus in Mexico, 1879.

Title:
Account book, 1783-1819.
This account book commences with the younger Samuel Seabury's arrival in Edinburgh, Scotland, on 29 July 1783 and records monies received, both from his father and from Edinburgh publisher William Creech (1745-1815), monies lent, board, laundry, and other personal expenses, purchases of books, clothing, stationery supplies, medicines, and an ear trumpet. It continues with entries for 1786 at New London and sporadic, brief entries of patients visited and services rendered, some with charges. Among items entered in unidentified hands are a lengthy inventory of household furnishings and tools, several very short miscellaneous lists, one-half page of entries entitled "North Carolina 1819," and what appears to be a series of payments from boarders. Several names recur, including William Creech, London bookseller John Rivington (1720-1792), Jonathan and Jared Starr, Stephen Notts ( - ), George Rogers ( - ), Mr. Blakeslee, and Thomas Allen (1755-1842) of Fishers Island, N.Y.
