Hide Profile

Samuel Seabury (1762-1795) was born in Jamaica, N.Y., a son of the Rev. Samuel Seabury (1729-1796) and Mary Hicks Seabury ( -1780). When his father traveled to England and Scotland seeking consecration as the first bishop of the Episcopal Church in America, young Samuel accompanied him and began studying medicine in 1783 at the University of Edinburgh. Samuel practiced as a physician/apothecary and settled in New London, Conn., opening his shop directly across the street from the parsonage in which his father, as rector of St. James's Church and as Bishop of Connecticut, resided. He married, but died childless in August 1795.
