Title:
Lasalle mort à Wagram.
This sheet with a preparatory sketch and notes in red ink on paper, presumably intended for an illustration, is entitled "Lasalle mort à Wagram." The notes are indications about the style, the harmony of colors, and the technique of execution, such as "brisures noires" stronger than ever; or the indication in brackets, "pour la couleur, continue celle du Colosse." The artist also lists the elements of the less "lisible" side: Napoleon's mask, eagle-phoenix, horse head, etc.

Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas papers, 1837-1961
Title:
Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas papers 1837-1961
The Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas Papers contain manuscripts of writings, letters, clippings, photographs, artworks, and personal papers relating to the life and work of Gertrude Stein and her companion, Alice B. Toklas, and to Gertrude's brother, Leo Stein, an artist and writer. As well as holding the bulk of Stein's literary output (often described as "experimental" or "cubist" writing), the materials document Stein and Toklas' involvement with the literary and art scene in Paris during the first half of the 20th century. Series I, Writings, contains holograph and typescript drafts of the majority of Gertrude Stein's writings, including "The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas," "The Making of Americans" (complete with a quantity of notes, or "studies"), "Tender Buttons" and a group of unpublished fragments and carnets, notebooks kept by Stein with preliminary drafts of writings. Series II, Correspondence of Gertrude Stein, contains letters sent from a wide variety of Stein's friends: artists such as Georges Bracque, Jean Cocteau, and Pablo Picasso; writers such as Sherwood Anderson, Ernest Hemingway, and Thornton Wilder; and acquaintances through many years such as Mildred Aldrich, Etta and Claribel Cone, Robert Haas, Mabel Dodge Luhan,Sir Francis Rose, Virgil Thomson, and Carl Van Vechten. Series III, Third Party Letters and Series IV, Alice B. Toklas Correspondence, contain letters from many of the same people, the latter group containing Alice Toklas's correspondence following Gertrude Stein's death. Series V, Personal Papers, and Series VI, Clippings, gather together various personal affects of Stein and Toklas as well as documentation of Stein's life as reported during her lifetime. Series VII, Photographs, show Stein from early childhood through 1946, the year she died. Prints showing Alice Toklas, various friends, artworks, and locales are included in this series, as are several volumes of prints made by Carl Van Vechten. Series VIII and IX contain numerous artworks and objects given by Stein and Toklas. Included here are a painting by Pablo Picasso and a sketch by Henri Matisse.

L'effusion lyrique ou la peinture retrouvée, 1955.
The 6 page manuscript in ink and pencil is divided into 3 parts, each on a separate leaf. The first two are dated "printemps 1955," and "hiver 1955." Each part has a title: I. "L'effusion lyrique ou la peinture retrouvée;" II. title illegible; III. "Le Surréalisme." The heavily edited text could be the outline for an article, a study, or just Masson's meditation about his artistic evolution, starting from the present (part I), then retracing his main steps from the past. In part I he notes "l'intuition d'un sens pictural neuf: la technique évolue;" and new ideas, such as "la dilatation par la lumière (et non le retrécissement par le dessin limitateur," or "le départ intuitif et non l'arrivée analytique"; also the need to define Bonnard. In part II the artist quotes from Odilon Redon, and notes the similarities between music and "une peinture totalement affranchie de la représentation intentionelle." Part III retraces his involvment with Surréalism, starting with the painting "4 élements" (1923-1924), then his rejection of an art adorned with literary jewels, and the "tableaux poétiques" (1927). Finally, the rupture in 1929: "Presque aussitôt parti qu'entré. Ainsi pas même un adieu."

Title:
Saidie A. May papers, ca. 1880-2002, bulk 1924-1972.
The Saidie A. May Papers contain the correspondence, art collection related papers, financial papers, and photographs of Saidie Adler May and document her art purchases and donations to the Baltimore Museum of Art as well as other museums. A significant amount of correspondence, research notes, and other material relating to Mrs. May and her collections that was created by BMA staff is also included. The staff continues to add to this collection as materials are found or created that relate to Mrs. May. Series 1, Art Collection, contains correspondence, lists, notes, research materials and other documents relating to Mrs. May's art collections. The Baltimore Museum of Art staff created a significant portion of this material after Mrs. May's death. Series 2, Financial Papers, contains documentation relating to Mrs. May's art purchases from 1919 until her death. A large part of the material consists of receipts and invoices from art dealers. This material is first divided into American Museums and Galleries and Foreign Galleries. Those dealers from whom Mrs. May purchased numerous items are filed separately. A few general receipts for book purchases are filed at the end of the subseries. Series 3, Correspondence, contains correspondence between Mrs. May and various museums, galleries and artists mostly relating to her purchases of artworks and their exhibition and donation to museums.
