L'effusion lyrique ou la peinture retrouvée, 1955.

The 6 page manuscript in ink and pencil is divided into 3 parts, each on a separate leaf. The first two are dated "printemps 1955," and "hiver 1955." Each part has a title: I. "L'effusion lyrique ou la peinture retrouvée;" II. title illegible; III. "Le Surréalisme." The heavily edited text could be the outline for an article, a study, or just Masson's meditation about his artistic evolution, starting from the present (part I), then retracing his main steps from the past. In part I he notes "l'intuition d'un sens pictural neuf: la technique évolue;" and new ideas, such as "la dilatation par la lumière (et non le retrécissement par le dessin limitateur," or "le départ intuitif et non l'arrivée analytique"; also the need to define Bonnard. In part II the artist quotes from Odilon Redon, and notes the similarities between music and "une peinture totalement affranchie de la représentation intentionelle." Part III retraces his involvment with Surréalism, starting with the painting "4 élements" (1923-1924), then his rejection of an art adorned with literary jewels, and the "tableaux poétiques" (1927). Finally, the rupture in 1929: "Presque aussitôt parti qu'entré. Ainsi pas même un adieu."
