Letters regarding the shipment of paintings to and from the Boston Athenaeum. Correspondents, writing almost exclusively to E.A. Crowninshield, Chairman of the Committee of Fine Art, include C.B. Fairbank, Thomas Hatfield, Charles Lanham, Edmund M. Loring, and James Robb. Sent as enclosures with the letters are three shipping receipts for transported paintings and a list of paintings owned by James Robb on loan to the Boston Athenaeum.

Hymnal with litany and prayers, written in northern Italy in two different hands: (ff. 1r-23r, 27r-32) copied in an irregular gothic bookhand with colored initials and musical notation, dating from the 15th cent.; (ff. 23r-27r) fragment from an unidentified office book, written in a protogothic script with burnished gold initials outlined in red with pen flourishes in green, dating from the 14th cent.

Letters (with typed transcriptions) and two short diaries describe many aspects of life as a Union solder in the Mass. Infantry Second Regiment, including camp life and routine, recruitment problems, perceptions of commanders, wounding and convalescence, and Crowninshield's feelings on the destruction of civilian property. Battles and campaigns mentioned include Antietam, Second Battle of Bull Run, Chancellorsville, the Chickamauga battlefield a year later, Savannah, the Shenandoah Valley, and his experiences with Sherman in the Carolinas. The letters were written either to his mother or his brother Edward. Also included are letters dealing with his trip to Europe after the war, his illness and death there in 1866, his 1865 passport, and a letter about his brother Edward's death in 1867.
