The Welsh artist Augustus John was a successful painter and draftsman, and a well known bohemian figure. He was in great demand as a portraitist, although his works were often controversial. During WWI he was employed by the Canadian government as a war artist in France. John visited the United States as a guest of the Carnegie Institute in 1923. In 1942 King George VI awarded him the Order of Merit for services to art.
Augustus John (1878-1961) was a Welsh artist and portrait painter. He studied at the Slade School in London (1894-1899) and in 1898 won the Slade Prize for his Moses and the Brazen Serpent . In 1914, by then a highly successful artist in Britain, he obtained a commission in the Canadian Army with permission to paint whatever he like on the Western Front. Although he was sent home only two months later for brawling, he attended the Versailles Peace Conference in 1919 and painted several of the delegates. By the 1920s John had become Britain's leading portrait painter whose sitters included Thomas Hardy, George Bernard Shaw, and T.E. Lawrence. Late in his life he wrote his autobiography in two volumes, Chiaroscuro and Finishing Touches .
Epithet: painter
Augustus John was a Welsh painter and a leading proponent of the avant-garde in Edwardian England. He excelled at the Slade School of Art, mastering composition and fine drawing in the traditional style; his work soon became more colorful, and his style freer. He lived a flamboyant, bohemian lifestyle, and is probably best remembered for his portraits of contemporary personalities, including George Bernard Shaw, T.E. Lawrence, Thomas Hardy, and Tallulah Bankhead. His sister, Gwen, was also an artist.
British painter.

Pudney, John, 1909-1977. Papers, 1850-1977 (bulk 1926-1976).
Title:
Papers, 1850-1977 (bulk 1926-1976).
The John Pudney Papers, 1850-1977 (bulk 1926-1976), include drafts, notes, printer's copies, galleys, research material, notebooks, diaries, and correspondence. Manuscripts for Pudney's poetry collections and chapbooks include Collected Poems, 1957, and Selected Poems, 1967-1973, as well as proofs for Beyond this Disregard (1943), South of Forty (1943), Spandrels: Poems and Ballads (1969), and Living in a One-Sided House (1976). Manuscripts for early and/or unpublished later poems, 1926-1968, are also present. Some materials such as those for Ten Summers: Poems, 1933-1943 include only notes and correspondence. Manuscripts of Pudney's fiction include The Accomplice (1950), Shuffley Wanderers: An Entertainment (1948), and 'Sleadley' (nd). Materials for such works as The Net (1952), Trespass in the Sun (1957), and Home and Away: An Autobiographical Gambit (1960), include only critical notes and correspondence. Nonfiction materials include the proposal and correspondence for The Thomas Cook Story (1953). These materials, which concern the British temperance movement, consist primarily of the mid-19th century letters and ephemera of Thomas Cook, George Cruikshank, and Emily Ellis. Also present are the manuscript for Lewis Carroll and His World (1976), a working notebook, 1947 on the history of the British Air Force, and numerous materials for the revised edition of The Smallest Room (1954, 1959), a humorous history of sanitation and water closets. The Correspondence series, 1937-1962, primarily concerns the revision of The Smallest Room. Other correspondence also describes the nature of Pudney's other literary endeavors and editorial duties, while letters from George Barker and H.E. Bates are of a more personal nature. Other significant correspondents include Kingsley Amis, Malcolm Arnold, John Betjeman, Benjamin Britten, Jocelyn Brooke, Sir Winston Churchill, Cynthia Coville (Secretary to Queen Mary), Oliver Dawney (Secretary to H.M. Queen Elizabeth), C. Day Lewis, T.S. Eliot, John Lehmann, Compton Mackenzie, Wolf Mankowitz, Lady Ottoline Morrell, Laurence Olivier, J.B. Priestly, Frederic Prokosch, Herbert Edward Read, Michael Redgrave, Vita Sackville-West, Edith Sitwell, Stephen Spender, Henry Treece, and Evelyn Waugh.

Manning, Hugo. Papers, 1942-1977.
Title:
Papers, 1942-1977.
Comprise correspondence, diaries, notebooks containing untitled poems, a book of sketches, and manuscripts of Manning's major poetical works. The secret sea is represented by several versions, including a version set to music by Denis ApIvor entitled Chorales. Twenty-eight diaries record daily events from 1957-77, and include poetry and drawings. Much of the correspondence simply thanks Manning for sending copies of his poetry, but letters from Henry Miller encourage him to write prose and say "those things which seem incommunicable," while letters from Mario Praz discuss the influence of Borges and T.S. Eliot on Manning's poetry.

Ussher, Arland. Arland Ussher correspondence, 1921-1959.
Title:
Arland Ussher correspondence, 1921-1959.
This collection of selected correspondence of Arland Ussher, philosopher, art critic, and Gaelic scholar, consists largely of over 200 letters between Joseph Hone, Irish critic and biographer, and Ussher. In addition there are letters from Edmund Blunden, Austin Clarke, Oliver St. John Gogarty, Jack Grene, Augustus John, William Kirkpatrick Magee, Sacheverell Sitwell, and Robert N.D. Wilson. The correspondence refers to philosophy, including that of Swift, Berkeley, Hegel, and Kant, the works of Joyce and Shaw as well as books by Ussher himself, including Face and Mind of Ireland. A typed copy of Yeats's "Crazy Jane and the King," which Ussher apparently intended to discuss in one of his books, is housed with some of the letters between Gogarty and Ussher. In addition, the holdings contain a 1953 letter from Ussher to Mr. Spicer-Simson about the latter's photographs of Ussher's medallions of Joyce, Shaw, and Yeats.

Carrington, Dora de Houghton, 1893-1932. Dora Carrington Collection, 1912-1965.
Title:
Dora Carrington Collection, 1912-1965.
Correspondence makes up the bulk of the Dora Carrington Collection, supplemented by a small book of woodcut prints by Carrington and a few poems and essays by other authors. The small Works Series holds a notebook, apparently hand-made, containing about twenty prints of woodcuts made by Carrington. The Correspondence Series contains outgoing, incoming, and third-party correspondence. Outgoing correspondence is made up of letters Carrington wrote to her friends and family. Many of her letters include drawings and woodcut prints. Particularly well represented are her letters to Noel Carrington and Mark Gertler. Incoming correspondence contains letters Carrington received from friends. Mark Gertler is again well represented with an accumulation of about 150 letters. Also present are letters from Henry Lamb, C. R. W. Nevinson, Ralph Partridge, and Albert Rutherston, as well as others. Letters from Augustus John include several poems. Third-Party correspondence is composed of letters written by Noel Carrington, Mark Gertler, and Ralph Partridge, as well as others, to other people, some after Carrington's death. Letters, 1917-ca. 1957.
The 12 letters of Augustus Edwin John were written in two different periods of his life. Four are on letterhead with his Chelsea address, where he lived from 1914 to 1927. The others are on the letterhead of his Fryern Court, Fordingbridge residence, where he lived from 1927 to his death. John sends the publisher Unwin the requested photograph (1917 June 14). He writes to William Rothenstein that he likes the price a collector offered for a portrait, but he believes that "Cockerell should have it for his museum" [Liverpool National Gallery; ca. 1918]. A short note to a friend (Foster?) schedules a meeting at the club (ca. 1917-1920). The artist informs a captain Sunderland that he may publish photographs of his Canadian studies, which are with Chenil & Co. in Chelsea (ca. 1920-1924)

John Quinn papers, 1901-1926
Title:
John Quinn papers 1901-1926
John Quinn (1870-1924) was a corporation lawyer in New York City who amassed an important private collection of paintings, drawings and sculpture as well as books and manuscripts of contemporary authors. In addition to promoting modern and avant-garde art in all forms, he particularly encouraged the work of members of the Irish Literary Revival, the artists of the Paris School, and English and American writers of his time. In 1923 he sold his manuscript and library holdings to subsidize his art collection. Collection consists mainly of correspondence, with writings, printed matter and photographs that document Quinn's artistic and political interests. Correspondence, 1901-1924, is with artists, art dealers, critics, poets, playwrights, booksellers, publishers, and members of his family. Files of letters and letterbooks contain correspondence relating to his interest in the artistic and literary scene in America and abroad, events in Ireland especially during the Home Rule movement, his purchase of paintings, sculpture, first editions and manuscripts of contemporary literature, and the sale of his library and manuscript collection. Also includes typescripts of literary works, typescript of the catalog of Quinn's art collection, ledgers, sales and exhibition catalogs, periodicals, and photographs of Quinn with individual artists and group portraits.
