Title: Boston and Albany Railroad Engineering Department Map Collection 1870-1920 1833-1910

The Boston and Albany Railroad was formed between 1867 and 1870 from the merger of three existing lines, the Boston and Worcester (chartered 1831), the Western (1833), and the Castleton and West Stockbridge (1834). The corporation was a primary east-west transit through the Commonwealth, with branches connecting towns including Athol, Ware, North Adams, and Hudson, N.Y. The nineteen atlases comprising this collection include detailed plans documenting the location and ownership of rights of way, land-takings, and other land transfers to or from the railroad company. Dating from the early years of operation for the corporation to just after the turn of the century, the atlases include maps of predecessor lines (Boston and Worcester Railroad Corporation and Western Rail-Road), as well as the Grand Junction Railway Company (Charlestown, Somerville, Everett, and Chelsea), the Ware River Railroad, and the Chester and Becket Railroad.

St 1833, c 116 established the Western Railroad Corporation and authorized it to lay out and construct a railroad from the western termination of the Boston and Worcester Railroad to the western boundary of Massachusetts in the direction of the Hudson River. The state secretary maintained the corporation's filings for the Commonwealth.

Phillips, Henry Ayling, 1852-1926. Genealogical notes, 1787-1905.

This collection of genealogical notes gathered by Phillips contains a few original manuscripts of his ancestors. Several folders include photographs of family homes and artifacts, as well as pertinent sketches and newsclippings. (The bulk of Phillip's genealogical notes, organized primarily by family name, was transferred to the New England Historic and Genealogical Society in 1978.). This collection consists of notes gleaned from primary and secondary (genealogies and local histories) sources. There are two folders pertaining to Phillips' father, Elijah Brigham Phillips (1819-1905), and a folder each concerning the ancestry and life of Thomas Brigham (1603-1653), Thomas Brigham, Jr. (1640-1717), Richard Mather, Increase Mather (1639-1723), and Artemas Ward. Among the original items are the estate settlement of Col. Levi Brigham (1716-1787); letters of Elijah Brigham Phillips to family members and railroad businessmen; receipts and land deeds, 1833-1853; and business papers pertaining to the various railroad companies (e.g., Wisconsin Central, Boston and Worcester) of which Elijah Brigham Phillips served as president. The latter's folders include a questionnaire on "Particulars of Early Railway Practices in 1840," extracts from his diary concerning the transporting of Civil War troops on his railroads, maps of railroads and stockyards, and various photographs, such as one of the Chicago fire, 1871. The collection also contains notes from estate inventories, deeds, wills, and diaries of contemporaries referring to Phillips' ancestors, as well as brief histories of various towns in which they settled, including Marlborough and Cambridge, Mass.
