Nozze del Duca di Savoia et Infanta, [1585].
Title:
Nozze del Duca di Savoia et Infanta, [1585].
Account of the wedding of Charles Emmanuel I Duke of Savoy and Infanta Catalina, second daughter of King Philip II of Spain, celebrated in Zaragoza. The King and his retinue received the Duke at the outskirts of the city, and led to the Palacio Arzobispal where the Court was lodged. The cardinal Granvelle celebrated the wedding without delay, and the day ended with a ball. The celebrations continued for the next three weeks, with balls, tournaments, contests, jousts, and various team games well attended despite rainy weather. There were also ceremonies in which the Duke created a number of knights of the Order of the Annunziata. On the last day of March, King Phillip awarded the Order of Golden Fleece to the Duke and to a few Grandees of his Court; the Duke distributed valuable gifts to the royal family and to all the important nobles. The next day the King and his retinue left for Barcelona; the newlyweds embarked for Italy, while the King and his Court headed to Poblet to spend Easter at the monastery there.

Correspondents include the kings of Spain and their emissaries in the New World. Transcripts are from the 1780s and mostly in the hand of Antonio de Ugina. They appear largely to duplicate other transcripts in the Muñoz Collection at the Biblioteca de la Real Academia de la Historia in Madrid. Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor, 1500-1558. Racalmuto documents, 1558-1928.
Title:
Racalmuto documents, 1558-1928.
Collection of documents relating to Racalmuto (also referred to as Recalmuto), a small city in the province of Agrigento, Sicily. The collection, spanning over three centuries (with a the bulk of the documents dated between the late 18th and the late 19th century) of history of the city, is predominantly comprised of items that pertain to the local aristocratic families that controlled the territory. These families, usually of Spanish descent or related to the Spanish crown, include the Burgio, the Naselli, the Requesens, the Carretto, and many others. Over the centuries, they received a wide range of privileges and grants over the areas of Racalmuto, as well as Pantelleria, Gibellina, and Comiso. Numerous financial and notarial documents record in great detail the activities of the local nobility under such privileges (including tax collection, sulfur extraction and trade, and sale and lease of real property). A large part of the remaining items consists of expert witness reports, trial proceedings (some printed), agreements, summonses, and other miscellaneous legal documents relating to lawsuits over use, ownership, and abandonment of the sulfur mines in the area. Most of these trials involved members of the Naselli and Burgio families, both as defendants and plaintiffs. A few documents cover the story of the castle of Racalmuto, a large estate owned by different families over the years that underwent multiple phases of remodeling and rebuilding. Various stamps, perhaps indicating the payment of the customary governmental stamp tax to issue official documents, appear on numerous items; they are the same as or similar to stamps on other documents in the Villafiorita Ducal Records. Additional maps of the Racalmuto mines (some of considerable dimensions), as well as miscellaneous financial documents are housed in the Oversize series.

Charles IX, King of France, 1550-1574. Miscellaneous manuscripts, (Large) 1566.
Title:
Miscellaneous manuscripts, (Large) 1566.
Original letter from Charles IX to Raymond de Rouer, sieur de Fourquevaux, his ambassador at the Spanish court of Phillip II. The French king claims to be pressured by his subjects in Provence and Languedoc to ransom a number of Frenchmen who had been captured by privateers in Algiers, Bone, and Tripoli. Charles IX reports that at first his ambassador to Constantinople was not able to meet with the traveling Suleiman I but was redirected to Belgrade, where he found himself in danger of being beheaded because the French had given assistance to the Knights of Malta and to the Spanish king. Despite the initial setback, the ambassador was able to gain favors with certain Pashas; Charles IX appears optimistic about the return of the captives. The report also contains intelligence on the Ottoman army, which is numbered at 300,000 men with a high quantity of artillery and other munitions. Charles IX claims that Suleiman plans to attack Agria and Transylvania by land, while his naval plans remain unknown. The letter is signed by Charles and countersigned by Florimond Robertet, his secretary of State. The letter is dated 20 August 1566, with the location indicated as Orcan. The text, written in a secretary script, appears on one half of the folded leaf; the other half of the leaf has the name of the addressee and a wax seal. Watermark of Charles IX depicts two intertwined columns topped with a crown and identifies the name of papermaker as Edmon Denise (Briquet, Colonne 4433, Mezières, 1564). A modern transcription of parts of the letter is included along with a detached piece of seal.

Thibadeau, William,. William and Carol Thibadeau collection, 1460-1779.
Title:
William and Carol Thibadeau collection, 1460-1779.
This collection contains seven documents signed by King Henry IV of Castile and Leon and Kings Phillip II, Ferdinand VI, and Charles III of Spain. These are generally documents that were sent to individuals. The first may be signed by Henry IV (half brother of Isabel I of Castile and brother-in-law of Ferdinand II of Aragon). The next three documents are signed by King Phillip II, son of Charles V (Charles I of Spain). Of these three, the first one refers to Doña Juana de Toledo, Duchess of Calona and her son Don Juan Fernandez Pacheco, Duke of Calona. The second is a letter absolving Martín Gonzalez, Captian of the galleon "Ocasión," of all charges. The third is a letter written to Don Pedro de Acuna, governor of Cartagena (New Grenada), regarding the salary of this same Martín Gonzalez. Documents by Ferdinand VI and Charles III address Cristobal Fernandez de Arce, an innkeeper who took out a mortgage on his inn. Finally, a document signed by Charles III sells the title Coronel del regimiento de Infantera de Ámerica, vacated by Miguel Porcel, to the Marques of Peñafiel. All dates are the ones directly preceding the signatures of the king and his scribe.

Documents pertaining to the reorganization of parishes in Mexico City : Mexico City, 1623 June 1.
Official copies, dated June 1, 1623, of documents from 1538-1623, concerning the reorganization of parishes in Mexico City. On Aug. 9, 1621, Philip IV orders the viceroy, Diego Carrillo, marqués de Gelves, to resolve these problems by meeting with church and city officials. Reports by Luis Tovar Godinez, viceroyalty secretary, on May 6, May 9, and May 21, 1623 document actions and resolutions of a junta composed of archbishop Serna, cathedral dean, Dr. Juan de Salcedo, and canon Dr. Diego de Guevara, who propose 3 new parishes: Santísima Trinidad, Santa María de Gracia, and Santa Ana. A copy of these documents is ordered by Tovar Godinez on June 1, 1623, at the request of viceroy Gelves. Other documents included are a list of public works completed during the administration of viceroy marqués de Guadalcazar (1612-1621), and a brief financial summary of revenues during that period from "tributos" and other taxes on playing cards, gunpowder, and quicksilver.

Philip II, King of Spain, 1527-1598. Miscellaneous manuscripts, 1700s.
Title:
Miscellaneous manuscripts, 1700s.
Copies of correspondence between King Charles I of Spain (Holy Roman Emperor Charles V), and later his heir Philip II, and various court secretaries and church officials regarding the moriscos of Valencia. The first letter is a report sent to Charles I in 1542 from Jerónimo Zurita advocating a less lenient policy toward the "newly converted Christians" of Valencia, who had previously been Muslims. His argument is that the mercies shown them by the King have only emboldened them to more openly adhere to the "sect of Mahoma." He also argues that the more tolerant policies of Valencia will attract moriscos from Castille and Granada, and Valencia will be overrun with moriscos. There is also a letter, probably from the same year, from Charles I to an unnamed official appointing him, along with Antonio Ramírez de Haro, Bishop of Calahorra, to investigate the morisco situation in Valencia. This is followed by a short letter to Charles I from Juan Pardo Tavera, Archbishop of Toledo. The remaining letters are mainly dispatches between Philip II and his secretary Gonzalo Pérez arranging a committee to discuss the situation of the moriscos in Valencia, including the names of the officials who are to comprise the committee. The manuscript was probably written in Spain in the mid-to late 18th century. It is written in a cursive script in 2 columns of 21-25 lines. There is a watermark similar to Valls i Subirá, Guarro, 501.

Philip II includes an addendum on the item explaining that the pope is actually serving his own needs by desiring to put a Catholic king on the throne of Portugal.

Title:
History of the memorable rebellion of Sir Thomas Wyat, 1799.
Manuscripts, in a single hand, of a history of Wyatt's Rebellion and biographies of those involved in it. The first volume contains the history of the Wyatt family; a history of Allington Castle in Kent, the Wyatts' seat and residence; and a narration of the rebellion itself. The second volume is a collection of 88 biographies of the lives and ancestries of those who were concerned in the rebellion, "with those of the noblemen, Knights, and Gentlemen, who supported the government by assisting to suppress the specious but wicked designs of these conspirators." The work is prefaced by an introduction in v. 1, in which Noble offers a critical perspective on the rebellion; the authors he consulted; and his personal motivations for the project, including his situation in Kent "on the very spot where Wyatt erected his standard." The author also includes numerous genealogies, decorated in red and blue ink. Tipped into vol. 1 is a genealogy of the Wyatt family with a coat of arms drawn and colored by "Martha Carless Noble" and another genealogy of the Astley family, while tipped into v. 2 are genealogies of the families of Pope; Southwell; and Dudley. The first volume also contains 17 drawings and engravings of people and places connected with the Rebellion, including engravings of Mary I; Mark Noble; Sir Thomas Wyatt; The inside view of the under chapel of St. Thomas within London Bridge; The Tower of London; and "Biography and History instructed by Minerva"; four drawings of Allington Castle, consisting of two pen-and-wash drawing by "Tho. Wildes. Inn Esq.", one of which is colored by "N[?] Alexander"; a pencil drawing by "Mrs. Cresswell"; and a pen-and-wash drawing by "Mark Noble, Jun." At the end of the manuscript are 9 engraved "medals and coins" of Philip II of Spain and Mary I, pasted in and annotated by Noble.

Report given by Bodoaro after returning to Venice from France where he visited the Emperor Charles V and his son Philip II of Spain in 1557. He reported on the steps towards peace that have been made between the Habsburgs, the King of France, and the Turks. He reported on Charles and Philip. He talked about their corruption, their selfish attitudes, and the powers and lands they controlled. He discussed the form of government abopted by these two men and how they organized their courts. He then described the impact of the Habsburg-Valois wars on the land and cities of France to show how the prosperity of that country was damaged by war. Badoer als reported on the treatment of religious minorities in France, and he gave information about the armies in France including the available supplies and how long they could support the forces. The manuscript was copied in 1585. Also found in the same binding: Discourse by Torquato Tasso on the Emperor Charles V and the revolt in France--Discourse on how to build a better fortress--Discourse on how to build fortress walls--Report on the reign in Sicily--Report on the duke of Terranova.
