Collection consists of audio recordings, originally recorded on reel-to-reel tape and audio cassette. Many of the recordings are of poets reading their work or the work of others at literary events held by the Poetry Project at St. Mark's Church-in-the-Bowery in New York City. Also includes recordings of poets reading their work and being interviewed on Susan Howe's radio shows on WBAI Radio in New York. Miscellaneous readings recorded in Connecticut and elsewhere are present. The collection includes audio publications Black Box No. 12 and BREATHINGSPACE/77. Papers of Dennis Phillips, a Los Angeles poet who has also worked as poetry editor for the LOS ANGELES WEEKLY and as book review editor for the literary magazine SULFUR. The accession, covering the years 1971-1992, includes notebooks and typescripts for all of Phillips's literary production up to 1992. Six of his published books are represented in the accession: FRONTIER (1980), THE HERO IS NOTHING (1985), A WORLD (1989), MEANS (1991), ARENA (1991), and 20 QUESTIONS (1992). The collection also includes a small collection of correspondence to Phillips from other contemporary writers and editors. Prominent correspondents include Donald Allen, George Butterick, Clayton Eshleman, Nate Mackey, and David Trinidad, among others.The papers are arranged in two series: 1) WRITINGS and 2) CORRESPONDENCE.The accession processed in 1999 includes personal correspondence dated 1992-1998, and correspondence (1979-1980) relevant to Phillip's editorial position at the LOS ANGELES WEEKLY. Also included are annotated drafts for BOOK OF HOURS, CREDENCE, NEW, SAND, and 20 QUESTIONS; drafts of shorter, uncollected writings; and, notebooks (1990-1995). Archives of the Sun & Moon Press, Douglas Messerli's "alternative" publishing venture, dedicated to experimental poetry, fiction and drama, begun in 1976 in College Park, Maryland, and later located in Los Angeles. The collection documents the publishing history of the press throughout most of its 28 years of operation and maps the literary careers and, in some cases, the personal lives of numerous American and international literary figures and artists. The bulk of the materials documents Sun & Moon's publishing activities from 1991-2002. The collection is a compilation of literary correspondence, both to and from Messerli, of Press production materials (manuscripts, typescripts, publishing proofs), and of various documents related to Sun & Moon's business activities (financial records, trade catalogues, and advertising materials). Biographical materials for various writers and artists, interviews, designs, collages, broadsides and postcards are scattered throughout the collection as well. Materials feature, for instance: proofs of work by David Antin, Susan and Fanny Howe, and Gertrude Stein; Sara Garden Armstrong's battery-driven art book designs and collages done by Lou Horvath and Nick Piombino; interviews with Michael Palmer, Allan Kaprow and Linda Montano (interviewed by Moira Roth); materials from the artist Claudia Delmonte, architect Allan Greenberg, sculptor Lawrence McCabe, country western songwriter Chuck Rosenberg, who studied with the well known writer John Ashbery, to mention just a few. Also included are production materials for the anthology FROM THE OTHER SIDE OF THE CENTURY: A NEW AMERICAN POETRY 1960-1990 and THE GERTRUDE STEIN AWARDS IN INNOVATIVE NORTH AMERICAN POETRY: 1993. Throughout the 1990s the press published several titles whose authors were selected as annual winners by the National Poetry Series and published the collection: 50: A CELEBRATION OF SUN & MOON CLASSICS (1995). Messerli's Green Integer succeeds Sun & Moon Press (after its closure in 2004) as the current venue for both celebrated and emerging poets and writers.

Papers of Lyn Hejinian, American poet, publisher and editor of Tuumba Press, co-editor of POETICS JOURNAL, and co-director of the literary project Atelos. She has been a member of the Poetics Faculty at the New College of California and is a professor in the English department at the University of California, Berkeley. Hejinian has spent most of her life in the San Francisco Bay Area and is associated with the Language School of contemporary poetry. John Taggart Papers, 1962-2002

Title: John Taggart Papers, 1962-2002

Papers of John Taggart, a contemporary American poet known for his formal and prosodic innovations. In addition to his long career as a professor at Shippensburg State University, Taggart has been involved in supporting literary communities and has written about key artistic and literary figures, in addition to producing his own creative work. The collection contains manuscripts and typescripts of Taggart's published and unpublished poetry, juvenilia from the 1960s and 70s, and fiction. The collection also contains many of his personal journals, notebooks, and loose notecards, as well as ongoing correspondence with writers, artists, and editors such as Theodore Enslin and Susan Howe. Taggart's work on translations of Sappho, Aeschylus, and Francis Ponge is also included. His nonfiction work consists mostly of essays, both published and unpublished, devoted to the work of individual writers and artists, such as George Oppen and Edward Hopper, as well as collective movements such as the Objectivist poets. Of note are included drafts of his articles "Walk Out: Rereading George Oppen" (CHICAGO REVIEW, 1998) and "George Oppen: One Line" (FLASHPOINT, 2002). The collection represents Taggart's ongoing poetic contributions, such as the collections DODEKA, CROSSES, WHEN THE SAINTS, and, most recently, PASTORELLES, as well as his lengthy continued correspondence with literary figures. Also of note are miscellaneous materials such as three-dimensional paper constructions as well as course materials related to his long tenure as a professor.

Papers of Kathleen Fraser, American poet, teacher and scholar. Influenced by the experimental poets of the New York School in the 1960s, Fraser became a prolific poet, an advocate of innovative women's writing, and a professor of creative writing at San Francisco State University. The collection contains correspondence with prominent poets and scholars; manuscript and typescript drafts of Fraser's published and unpublished poetry, prose and essays; administrative and production materials related to the literary magazine HOW(EVER); interviews with Fraser; teaching materials; and video and audiocassette recordings.
