A collection of letters from Horace Walpole, youngest son of Sr Robert Walpole Earl of Orford to Horace Mann resident at Florence, 1741-1786.
Manuscripts, in the hands of Horace Walpole and Thomas Kirgate, of 833 transcripts of Walpole's letters to Sir Horace Mann. In his correspondence, Walpole discusses such topics as family news, including the illnesses of his father, Sir Robert Walpole, and news pertaining to Mann's family; news "in town," including weddings, deaths of friends, balls, gossip, the Opera, artwork, and transcriptions of popular epigrams and new songs; and political affairs, including Parliament elections, debates, and bills, as well as international affairs such as the Seven Years' War and the American War of Independence. The first volume contains a preface in which Walpole writes that though the letters had not been written with the intention of public consumption, upon a second perusal he discovered passages which might be entertaining to a large audience.

Manuscript, in a single hand, of 59 letters from Sir James Porter to Richard Phelps while Porter was British minister in Brussels. The letters chiefly contain discussions of European politics, especially concerning France, as well as news of social visits by Porter's acquaintances in Brussels. Other topics include the health of members of European royalty; an account of a duel between John Wilkes and Samuel Martin in a letter dated November 25, 1763; and other disparaging references to Wilkes in subsequent letters. The letters also frequently mention Porter's services and well-wishes towards John Montagu, 4th earl of Sandwich, as well as the diplomatic activities of Thomas Mortimer, English vice-consul for the Austrian Netherlands, and Sir William Gordon, another English minister at Brussels.

In the hurry of Parliamentary business and under the terrors of a political dissolution, he has not forgotten what she mentioned concerning her little island at Hampton. He has been with several men of the "Thames and Navigation Committee" to discuss the business. Recommends that she write to the leading member, William Hurford. The new water-bailiff is Wiliam Saxby. He encloses the late "Report of the Thames and Navigation Committee." Miss [Mary?] Wilkes desires very particular compliments.

Diary, 1768, Dec. 8 -- 1773, Apr. 4, (bulk 1768, Dec. 8 -- 1769, Apr. 28 )
Diary and memorandum book of an unidentified Bostonian, probably a relative of John Olds, a London merchant. The largest portion of the diary covers his stay in London from December 1768 to late April 1769 (ff. 2-58). The diariest sailed from Boston to London in October 1768, onboard of the Amazon. The diarist, evidently a single young man, also recounts his visits to the relatives, (one of whom asked him "whether people in America talk'd English"), sightseeing and social life -- coffeehouses, the Old Bailey, Parliament, St. Paul's cathedral, the Tower, etc (including admission fees), and a detailed record of a session of a "Disputing Club" that held a moderated debate on "whether or not if was to the honour of Britain to tax America." Much of this portion of the diary is devoted to politics, especially the Middlesex election of John Wilkes (the diary opens with an account Brentford riots) and the American policies of the cabinet. An intensely religious person, he attended services at various London churches, including George Whitefield's Tabernacle; the diary contains detailed records of sermons and preachers. The diary also frequently mentions John Olds and Thomas Bromfield (1734-1816), a Boston merchant who had settled in London in 1760. This portion ends with a record of his voyage to Boston board of the Paoli; he arrived to the city on June 19, 1769. The other, smaller, portion of the diary consists of detailed records of sermons, mostly by John Hunt and John Bacon of the Old South Church, that the diarist attended between Jan. 14, and Apr. 1773; the records include the author's own religious reflections. Also included is a certificate of residency issued by the town of Weathersfield, Conn. to Peter Verstille who had moved there from Boston in April 1760.

Transcripts of letters from Horace Walpole to Horace Mann, 1741-1786.
Manuscripts, in Dr. John Allen's hand, of transcripts of 833 letters from Horace Walpole to Sir Horace Mann.

Journal of the most remarkable events of the reign of King George the third, from the beginning of the year 1769, being a supplement to the memoires of Mr. Horace Walpole, carried on by himself, 1771.
Manuscript, in Walpole's hand, of a draft, with numerous corrections, of a description and commentary of political events, primarily concerning Parliamentary activities, between 1769 and 1771. Arranged by date, the draft includes descriptions of the reactions to the publication of the Junius letters; Parliamentary discussions concerning the repeal of taxes in America; the activities of John Wilkes, with criticism of his paper, the North Briton; Parliamentary speeches along with descriptions of their effects on their listeners; and summaries of various alliances, maneuvers, and administrative changes within Parliament. Throughout, Walpole includes his own opinions upon the persons and events he describes. The draft is followed by a piece, also in Walpole's hand, titled Journal from the conclusion of the session of Parliament in May 1771, which contains information on the activities of John Wilkes; the deaths and promotions of prominent political figures; and the publication of Smollett's "servile book called Humphrey Clinker."

Title:
Letters to Francis Seymour-Conway, 1743-1784.
Collection, in a single hand, of 61 letters from Henry Seymour-Conway to his brother, Lord Francis Seymour-Conway, in which he discusses military, political, and social news between 1744 and 1784. The collection contains discussion of his military service in the Netherlands in the 1740s, including a detailed description of battle against the French in a letter dated June 30, 1743; he also mentions his campaign in Germany during the Seven Years' War, including his altercation with Col. Beckwith, his irritation with a commission he has been given, and news of a peace treaty between Austria and Prussia. In 1744 he discusses the practicality of buying a regiment, asks his brother for help raising the money, and offers to sell his own South Sea stock. He writes several letters from Dublin Castle reporting on Irish politics, including some movements in the House of Lords regarding "papists." In England, he complains about prime minister George Grenville's uncivil and unjust treatment of him and defends his decision in the affair of the Britannic Legion and in the John Wilkes affair which led to his dismissal from court and military office in 1764. Conway also occasionally mentions American affairs, including one letter in 1766 which reports the repeal of the Stamp Act, and another in 1774 in which he expresses pleasure on hearing that violent measures in America had been rejected for the present. Numerous letters make reference to friends and family, including his wife Lady Ailesbury and Conway's close friend Horace Walpole, who offers financial assistance after Conway's dismissal; becomes ill in 1765; and visits Conway after Conway's retirement in 1784.

Title:
Diary, 1768, Dec. 8 -- 1773, Apr. 4, (bulk 1768, Dec. 8 -- 1769, Apr. 28 )
Diary and memorandum book of an unidentified Bostonian, probably a relative of John Olds, a London merchant. The largest portion of the diary covers his stay in London from December 1768 to late April 1769 (ff. 2-58). The diariest sailed from Boston to London in October 1768, onboard the Amazon. The diarist, evidently a single young man, also recounts his visits to the relatives (one of whom asked him "whether people in America talk'd English"), sightseeing and social life -- coffeehouses, the Old Bailey, Parliament, St. Paul's cathedral, the Tower, etc (including admission fees), and a detailed record of a session of a "Disputing Club" that held a moderated debate on "whether or not it was to the honour of Britain to tax America." Much of this portion of the diary is devoted to politics, especially the Middlesex election of John Wilkes (the diary opens with an account of the Brentford riots) and the American policies of the cabinet. This portion ends with a record of his voyage to Boston onboard the Paoli; he arrived to the city on June 19, 1769. The other, smaller, portion of the diary consists of detailed records of sermons, mostly by John Hunt and John Bacon of the Old South Church, that the diarist attended between Jan. 14 and Apr. 1773; the records include the author's own religious reflections. Also included is a certificate of residency issued by the town of Weathersfield, Conn. to Peter Verstille who had moved there from Boston in April 1760.
