Papers consist of correspondence and other items. Correspondence includes family letters from Thomas Gadsden, cousin Jonathan Gadsden, and others to John Gadsden at the College of Saint James (Maryland), the High School of Charleston (S.C.), and the Holy Communion Church Institute in Charleston (S.C.) regarding family matters, education, religion, politics, and other concerns. There is also a letter (1865) from Thomas Gadsden in Charleston (S.C.) to "Jane" concerning conditions in Charleston and the plights of many families there just after the Civil War. In addition, there are many letters to John Gadsden at the Institute from the parents of his students, who came from all over South Carolina (Bluffton, Orangeburg, Anderson, Spartanburg, and elsewhere) as well as places such as Pennsylvania, Florida, and Alabama. Also included is John Gadsden's personal and professional correspondence with Anthony Toomer Porter, Bishop Howe, Nathaniel Russell Middleton, and many others. "Notes from a War Diary" (n.d.) contains excerpts from a Civil War diary (1864-1865) kept by John Gadsden concerning wartime events and conditions in Charleston (S.C.); transcribed and annotated by his son W.H. Gadsden. Also included are printed materials, memorabilia, and a scrapbook containing obituaries of John Gadsden.

Papers consist of correspondence, estate records, writings, and other items. Included are the papers of John Gadsden (1833-1902) and Gadsden allied families. Correspondence includes letters (1854-1857) of Philip Gadsden (d. 1857) in Mexico City (Mexico) to his mother and sister regarding experiences there with his uncle James Gadsden (a U.S. foreign minister); topics include social life, social conditions, and family matters. In addition, there is correspondenece (1840-1852) of Christopher Edwards Gadsden and Thomas Gadsden regarding family matters, religion, politics, and education. Papers of Thomas F. Gadsden (1839-1891) include correspondence with W.B.W. Howe and other clergy concerning affairs of the diocese and an essay (1851) on war. Estate records (1829-1895) of Philip Gadsden (1798-1870) include accounts, copies of his will, and other items. Personal and business correspondence (1877-1940) of John B. Gadsden (1860-1944) includes letters regarding his service as superintendant of the 6th Lighthouse District (headquarters at Charleston, S.C.) and his management of the Oakland Hunting Club. Papers (ca. 1920-1950) of Jeanne Gadsden, daughter of John B. Gadsden consist of a Gullah story about Brer Wolf and Brer Rabbit, poems, and correspondence regarding financial and social matters, genealogy, and other topics. Other items include biographical materials about Christopher Gadsden (1724-1805); photographs of Gadsden family portraits; and genealogical materials, including a Gadsden family chart, correspondence, wills, family Bible records, clippings, and other items pertaining to the Gadsden family and related families including the Farr and Hamilton families.

The subject of the correspondence is the destitute condition of the widow and orphaned children of the late Rev. O.T. Porcher and the efforts to secure relief for the family. Correspondence consists of letters to E. Horry Frost (treasurer of the "Clergy Society, S.C.") from W.H. Parker and Bishop W.B.W. Howe, and a letter (1877 May 14) from Bishop Howe to W.H. Parker. One letter (1877 May 29) from Parker to Frost is a formal application to the Clergy Society for assistance for the Porcher family.
