The Protestant Episcopal Church in the Diocese of South Carolina was created in 1785 to continue the work of the churches established under the Church of England during the colonial period. From the lowcountry parishes established in the early eigtheenth century, the diocese expanded westwardly throughout the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. In 1922 it was divided geographically into two parts: the Diocese of South Carolina, encompassing the older parishes of the coastal region, and the Diocese of Upper South Carolina, which includes churches to the west of Columbia, its see city.
