A portion of this correspondence concerns Maria Leitner's attempts to enter the United States. Some correspondence is from Carlisle Smith, assistant to William C. Lengel. Item post-dating Helen Dreiser's death is a magazine with an article about William C. Lengel. Separate from the alphabetical correspondence files are filed some legal case files concerning Dreiser's publications in South America. Lengel acted as an agent for Dreiser in these cases, which dealt with the works America Is Worth Saving and Jennie Gerhardt. The names of correspondents in these files are listed below. This correspondence lies in folders 7057-7058.

A collection of letters and manuscripts of Dreiser. Among the seventeen letters are four written to the American editor William C. Lengel, concerning the writing of THE "GENIUS." The collection also contains the holograph manuscripts of "Fulfillment," a short story published in the author's CHAINS in 1927, and "Some American Women Painters," a journalistic essay written ca. 1897 and apparently unpublished (see article by Ellen Moers, COLUMBIA LIBRARY COLUMNS, May 1966, pp. 10-24).
