British admiral.
Sir William Sidney Smith, British admiral. He entered the navy in 1777, and was present at the action of Cape St.Vincent in 1780 and Dominica in 1782. He distinguished himself in the naval operations during the wars of First and Second Anti-French Coalition, his most famous exploit being the defense of St. Jean d'Acre in 1799. From 1803 to 1807 he was assigned to duty in the northern Mediterranean. He resigned in 1814, after a year at the South American station and a final tour in Mediterranean.

Porter, Jane, 1776-1850. Diary of Jane Porter [manuscript], 1801-1803.
Title:
Diary of Jane Porter [manuscript], 1801-1803.
Begins January 1, 1801, with frequent entries to June 8, 1801; scattered entries for 1802; one only for 1803 (2 February). Many entries are long and filled with details about Jane's activities: reading, writing, theater attendance, and innumerable visits, but especially about her own intimate feelings, the recording of which is her chief avowed object. Both Jane and her sister Maria wrote for the stage and were in close touch with it, the diary supplying much information on the subject. Charles Kemble and Maria Theresa De Camp (later his wife) are among Jane's closest friends and are much discussed. The first appearance of Henry Caulfield (another close friend) as Hamlet at Drury Lane (a marked success) is described in detail (leaves 37, 61). Other persons who figure prominently are: Jane's brother Robert, her sister Anna Maria, Mary Robinson ("Perdita"), the brothers Horatio and James Smith, a Sir Sidney Smith, and John Stockdale (e.g. leaf 24v).

Paterson, Charles William, 1756-1841. Papers of Charles William Paterson, 1777-1858 (bulk 1793-1798).
Title:
Papers of Charles William Paterson, 1777-1858 (bulk 1793-1798).
The twin cores of this small collection consist of (1) six letters from Captain Paterson to his uncle Charles William Tonyn (d. 1805, rector of Radnage in Buckinghamshire) and to his grandmother, written chiefly from the Mediterranean in 1793-1794, mentioning in passing the French Royalist uprising at Toulon in November 1793, Sir william Sidney Smith's attack on the French naval fleet and arsenal in the Inner Harbor at Toulon, and Paterson's own concerns for his family, patronage, and promotion, and (2) the Navy Board's various letters to Paterson concerning the personnel, supplies, and refitting of the ship Admiral de Vries at Chatham Yard in 1798. Other than a brief testimonial and a list of his promotions, there is virtually nothing about Paterson's earlier service in North America or his activities during the remainder of the Napoleonic Wars.

Fellowes, William Dorset, d. 1828. Biographical notes on Sir Sidney Smith, 1846.
Title:
Biographical notes on Sir Sidney Smith, 1846.
Manuscript, in multiple hands, of a collection of several hundred handwritten notes, sketches, printed materials, and newspaper clippings, pasted or tipped in, and primarily concerning Sir Sidney Smith, Admiral of the Royal Navy. The volume includes a substantial printed biography of Smith by John Marshall; several newspaper clippings of his death; printed correspondence between Smith and the British consul in Morocco titled Correspondence on the Aethopian sea, and the ancient Atlantide island, "presented to Mr Dorset Fellowes by Sir Sidney Smith"; a handwritten transcript of "Anecdotes and recollections respecting Sir Sidney Smith and Captain Wright of the Royal Navy, by W. D. Fellowes"; excerpts from John Barrow's biography of Smith; and an engraving of Smith's arms. The work is prefaced by a memorandum dated 1848, in which the author presents his nephew Charles Fellowes, Lieutenant in the Royal Navy, with these notes; another memorandum observes that the purpose of collecting these notes was to preserve the memory of his esteemed friend's achievements. The manuscript also includes numerous notes, sketches, engravings, and documents concerning the establishment of the Knights Templar in London in 1830, to which Smith and Fellowes belonged. This material includes an official document convening the members of the order, signed by Fellowes, the secretary; a list of the members of the Order of the Temple, assembled under Augustus Frederick, Duke of Sussex, in 1830; a pen-and-colored wash drawing of a Knight Templar; and a printed French biography and several engravings and signatures of the Duke of Sussex. The volume also contains numerous notes on King Richard I of England, especially concerning the cross he wore in the Holy Land; notes on the Crusades; a printed history of Richard I; a map and engraving of Loches, where Richard I's arms were found; a pencil drawing of the arms at the Priory of Saint Ours in Loches; and an engraving of the castle in which he was held captive. The mansucript also contains a note on Fellowes' brother, Sir Thomas Fellowes, also in the Royal Navy; and clippings and notes on the Duke of Wellington; Jean-Andoche Junot; and Napoleon Buonaparte.

Title:
Papers of Jane Porter, 1760-1850.
Collection strengths include the family correspondence of Jane Porter, Robert Ker Porter, and Anna Maria Porter spanning the years 1795-1841. The letters describe the social customs of the Regency and early Victorian eras, as well as the family's struggle to maintain an expected place in society despite great financial difficulties. The letters also mention, over the years, various novels, plays, and travel narratives the Porters are writing and publishing. The main weakness of the collection is the lack of manuscript material for Jane, Robert Ker, and Anna Maria Porter.

Title:
Autograph collection, 1833-1889.
Little is known of Sarah McCurdy Jarvis, divorced wife of the Rev. Samuel Farmer Jarvis. It is obvious, however, from the evidence of this two vol. autograph collection, that she was a popular hostess and had many admirers among statesmen, writers and musicians in Europe and the U.S. Besides signatures, the collection contains aphorisms, poems and passages from literature inscribed by Chateaubriand, Dickens and Vigny, among others. Also included are three letters tipped-in from Samuel F.B. Morse; to W.P. Finley (1836), Thomas Sully (1842) and a letter of introduction for Osbert B. Loomis (1871).

Gardner, John Dunn, 1811-1903. [Journals and notebooks], 1833-1871.
Title:
[Journals and notebooks], 1833-1871.
Holograph manuscript travel journals and notebooks kept by John Dunn Gardner between 1833 and 1871. Journal (4 vols.): 1) "Journal of my travels on the continent," 1835 Jun-Dec. 270 p. Account of a lengthy sojourn in France, particularly in Paris. In addition to sightseeing, expenses and travel conditions, and art and architecture commentaries, topics include Paris libraries; visits to booksellers and to Galignani's; attendance at plays, concerts, and operas; and impressions of the Chambres des Deputes, several hospitals and an insane asylum, an orphanage, and the Paris Zoo. Also described are Gardner's conversations with Sir William Sidney Smith; libraries and bookshops at Nantes, La Rochelle, Bordeaux, Lyons, and Marseilles; a tour of the house where Montesquieu wrote De l'esprit des lois; and the steamer voyage from Marseilles to Leghorn. 2) "John Dunn Gardner's Journal of travels," 1836-1871 (548 p.). Contains diary entries for several European tours: the continuation of his 1835 tour into Italy, 1835 Dec-1836 Sep; a shorter visit to the Channel Islands, Brittany, and Paris, 1837 Feb-Jun; a "Grand Tour" that includes both Western Europe and Poland, Estonia and Russia, 1837 Jul-1838 Dec; and several Continental trips with his wife Ada and their growing family between 1850 and 1871. These provide exhaustively detailed itineraries and descriptions of daily activities; visits to libraries and purchases of books in Germany and Italy; commentary on social and economic conditions in Eastern Europe, especially in Estonia and St. Petersburg; and many full appreciations of artwork and architecture. The 1837-1838 journals contain extensive discussion of individual paintings and sculpture, including the Van Eyck altarpiece at Ghent and works by the Dutch masters. The 1850 journal entries on Gardner's ascent of Mont Blanc and climbs around Chamonix formed the basis for his The Ascent and Tour of Mont Blanc (Chiswick, 1851). Gardner's notes on his 1871 trip to France contain his observations of the effect of the Franco-Prussian War on life and morale in Paris. 3) "Journal of John Dunn Gardner's journies on the Continent," 1867-1868, contains short entries on a vacation with his family in the South of France in early 1867; and the beginning of an extensive journal for 1867 Jul-1868 February, which is continued in 4). This latter journal documents Gardner's solo travels through Spain, Portugal and Gibraltar, and contains detailed descriptions of bullfights; the manufacture of sherry; local customs, foods, and costumes; contrasts between "Iberian" lifestyles and English practices; and notes on the difficulty of travel due to bad roads and inadequate facilities. Notebooks (3 vols.): small, mostly blank notebook containing quotations from "Professor Millar's Historical View of the English Government, 4 vol. 1818;" notebook containing reading notes on works of Greek and Roman history; mostly blank notebook divided into two sections, "Prose March 3rd, 1833" and "Poetry March 3rd, 1833" and containing numbered quotations from various English, Latin and Greek authors, including Cicero, Addison and Steele, Samuel Johnson, Thomas Jefferson, Lucretius, Euripides, and Shakespeare.
