Title: Military volunteer family assistance records, 1861-1866.

These records are created/maintained to provide assistance, according to Alabama law, to counties for indigent care based on the information gathered by the appointed agents. The agents were required to submit reports to the Governor on the number and condition of indigent families of Alabama volunteers absent from the precincts and the total amount of funding necessary for each county's assistance during the Civil War and the early years of Reconstruction (Ala. Acts, 3. p. 4-9 [1861]). Information available in these records includes names of volunteers or heads of household, the company and regiment, number in the family (wives, dependent children, parents and siblings), ages, extent of need, aid offered in kind or money, number of indigent families per county and total amount of aid disbursed per county.

The Governor is the chief executive of the state whose function is to administer the laws of the state. This series consists of the administrative files of Governor Patton. It contains correspondence, applications, canceled notes, financial records, letters, oaths of allegiance, petitions for pardons, proclamations, and reports. Subjects discussed include: appointments to and resignations from office, including appointments and dismissals in the Third Military District of the U.S., commanded by Major General George G. Meade, letters from destitute individuals and attempts by both the state and federal governments to assist them through the Freedmen's Bureau and other means, including a controversy in Demopolis, the Alabama Penitentiary in Wetumpka, the milita in Alabama, bankrupt individuals, race relations and labor contracts, a survey of the Coosa River, public education and institutions such as the University of Alabama, the Alabama Institute for the Deaf and Dumb, salt supplies, taxes and taxation, the encouragement by the Governor and others of increasing industrialization in Alabama and immigration from Europe, railroads in Alabama and their growth and funding, the bonded indebtedness of the State of Alabama, a Justice of the Peace Commission, land leases in Calhoun County and St. Clair County for oil and gas exploration, and an attempt to organize a colonization society of African-Americans to go to Chile. In the correspondence files, many subjects are discussed. Many of the letters there are actually requests or recommendations for appointments. There are requests, however, for arms to secure areas from mobs, such as the letter in SG23023, folder 18, from the sheriff of Coosa County. In the state folder is a letter from Dr. Josiah C. Nott pleading for the Mobile Medical College to be released by the Freedmen's Bureau and restored to its position as a medical school. There are many requests for pardons to the Governor, as well as many petitions to him. The records also include the message to the General Assembly delivered on January of 1866.

Title: Secretary's letters, 1867-1908.

This series consists of letterbooks containing copies of the outgoing letters of the Governor's private secretary, 1867-1870, 1874-1908. Most of the volumes are letterpress copybooks, and after 1887 many letters were typed. The letters are largely routine in nature, concerning topics such as appointments, extraditions and requisitions and the financial affairs of the state. Occasionally a copy of a letter signed by the Governor may also be recorded.

Alabama. Governor. Inaugural addresses and programs, 1841-1995.

Title: Inaugural addresses and programs, 1841-1995.

This series details the governor's priorities for his administration. Among the subjects discussed are economic problems and development in the state, the state bank, constitutional issues, the state penitentiary, convict leasing, railroads, race relations, education, secession, reunion, and many other issues. There are some gaps in this series. The only antebellum inaugural addresses are the ones for Joshua L. Martin, in 1841, and for A.B. Moore in 1859. There are no inaugural addresses between 1866 and 1878 and between 1896 and 1907. After that time the inaugurals are reasonably complete. Remember to look in the gubernatorial papers for any inaugural addresses not present here. There are inaugural programs for George C. Wallace in 1963, 1975, and 1983; Lurleen B. Wallace in 1967, for Fob James in 1979 and 1995, and for Guy Hunt in 1987 and 1991.
