Military volunteer family assistance records, 1861-1866.

These records are created/maintained to provide assistance, according to Alabama law, to counties for indigent care based on the information gathered by the appointed agents. The agents were required to submit reports to the Governor on the number and condition of indigent families of Alabama volunteers absent from the precincts and the total amount of funding necessary for each county's assistance during the Civil War and the early years of Reconstruction (Ala. Acts, 3. p. 4-9 [1861]). Information available in these records includes names of volunteers or heads of household, the company and regiment, number in the family (wives, dependent children, parents and siblings), ages, extent of need, aid offered in kind or money, number of indigent families per county and total amount of aid disbursed per county.
