The administrative files of Dr. Roy R. Kracke were primarily created between 1944 and 1950 although some materials, primarily contracts relating to the construction of Jefferson Hospital, date back to 1939. The files consist of correspondence and reports documenting the organization and day-to-day operation of the Medical College. Correspondence provides information about Kracke's efforts to recruit faculty and staff and to organize clinical departments. Correspondence also provides information about the lack of operating funds created by the heavy burden of caring for indigent patients. Correspondence with local community leaders also documents Kracke's efforts to create a medical center. Additional materials document Kracke's administrative relations with presidents of the University of Alabama and the operations of Jefferson-Hillman Hospital (later University Hospital). Reports provide information about research activities, patient care, and the Medical College curriculum.

Title: Papers of John Lee Pratt [manuscript], 1931, 1940-1972.

The papers deal primarily with Pratt's educational philanthropy especially for medical and scientific research at Johns Hopkins' McCollum Pratt Institute and the science departments at the University of Virginia. In addition there are papers relating to his interest in radio astronomy work in Australia, The Brookings Institute, and agricultural research at Rutgers. Considerable correspondence is generated by his interest in gingko trees and his crops and livestock at Sherwood Forest farm, Fredericksburg, Va. Pratt's services in World War II are documented by routine correspondence and reports as senior consultant for Lend-Lease, and as a member of the Foreign Economic Administration, the Office of Production Management, and the War Resources Board. Of interest are drafts of the Industrial Moblization Plan and his 1944 diary of the London mission of Edward Stettinius, Under Secretary of State. A final segment is concerned with general fund raising at the University of Virginia, especially as a member of the Alemni Board of Trustees of the University of Virginia Endowment fund. With the papers is a bronze head of Edgar Allan Poe, a 1963 award of the Raven Society.

The Philip S. Hench Walter Reed Yellow Fever Collection documents the work of the U.S. Army Yellow Fever Commission, the legacy of the commission’s discoveries, the lives of individuals who were connected to the commission, and twentieth century campaigns to shape public memory of the commission. Items in the collection date from 1800 to 1998, with the bulk of the items dating from 1864 to 1974. A wide range of formats are represented in the collection including, but not limited to the following: articles, artifacts, audiocassettes, bills (legislative records), biographies, charts (graphic documents), correspondence, diaries, editorials, interviews, journals (periodicals), magazines, maps, medical records, military records, negatives (photographic), notes, photographs, reports, reprints, scrapbooks, and speeches. Unique materials in the collection are supplemented with copies of original documents and photographs housed in other institutions (e.g the U.S. National Archives). Most of the materials in the collection were collected or created by Nobel laureate Philip Showalter Hench while researching the history of the U.S. Army Yellow Fever Commission.
