The papers of illustrator, muralist, theatrical set designer, and professor, Maxine Seelbinder Merlino papers measures 1.1 linear feet and date from 1928-2003. The collection includes correspondence; newspaper clippings and reviews of artist's work; sketches for stage and set designs and mural decorations; federal commission contracts; exhibition brochures; theater playbills and announcements; photographs; original art work, including watercolor sketches; original lithographs; and material on the dedication of the Merlino Gallery at California State University, Long Beach.Documenting Merlino's work on New Deal federal government programs are letters sent to her in the early 1940s from the Public Buildings Administration and the Section of Fine Arts of the Federal Works Agency in Washington, D.C. as well as three photographs of a mural executed by Merlino for the Recorder of Deeds Building in Washington, D.C. that depicts Benjamin Banneker, a pioneering African-American surveyor, inventor, and astronomer.Representing Merlino's early New York period are brochures of group exhibitions and her one-woman show in a theater gallery. Among the original works of art are two original lithographs: <emph render="italic">Franco's Destruction</emph>, which was reproduced in a 1938 issue of <emph render="italic">New Masses</emph>, and <emph render="italic">Hearst's Empire</emph>, which appeared in the April 1938 edition of <emph render="italic">The Fight</emph> magazine.

Presents the oral histories of six women who were active in the Chicana feminist movement in Los Angeles, beginning in the 1960s and early 1970s. Four of them were involved in Hijas de Cuauhtemoc (the oral histories of three are available only at the CSULB Special Collections site until spring 2006); one was a founding member of Comision Feminil Mexicana (CFM) and another was active in it and in educational organizations. An additional short interview with a researcher who interviewed Chicanas about their participation in the 1975 Mexico City conference is also included.

Presents the oral histories of four men involved in discovering the cause of subsidence in Long Beach harbor, their efforts to stop it and to resolve the question of ownership of the local tidelands. The narrators describe the scientific and political controversies that led to a program of water injection to stop the sinking of the land under Long Beach. They also discuss the legal battle to decide which political entities have an interest in revenue from oil pumped out from under the tidelands. The narrators also describe other activities in which they engaged, including working for real estate companies owned by the Bixby family, giving public relations advice to local businesses and projects, and evaluating proposed solutions to local subsidence and examples of subsidence in other places.

Presents the oral histories of three women activists in the Los Angeles Asian American women's movement of the 1960s and 1970s and one of their close male allies. These activists focused their political work in grass roots community programs. They developed one of the first multi-0media interactive presentations on the Asian women's movement, which was performed along the West Coast, and founded the first Asian Women' Center in the U.S. They collaborated in other social movement struggles and, despite ongoing struggles with the men in the larger Asian American movement, the women activists remained committed to and involved in that broader movement.
