Presents the oral histories of four men involved in discovering the cause of subsidence in Long Beach harbor, their efforts to stop it and to resolve the question of ownership of the local tidelands. The narrators describe the scientific and political controversies that led to a program of water injection to stop the sinking of the land under Long Beach. They also discuss the legal battle to decide which political entities have an interest in revenue from oil pumped out from under the tidelands. The narrators also describe other activities in which they engaged, including working for real estate companies owned by the Bixby family, giving public relations advice to local businesses and projects, and evaluating proposed solutions to local subsidence and examples of subsidence in other places.
