Title: Fire insurance maps, 1895-1942.

The collection consists of seventy original hand-colored plans and maps. Most are single sheets, approximately 21" x 26" containing a site plan and axonometric drawing with materials denoted by a watercolor wash. The sheets also contain a printed synopsis of the plant and available fire protection systems. The subjects are primarily textile mills, paper products factories and foundries in New England and New York. About a quarter of the sheets are maps of urban water-main systems in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Delaware. One sheet is a panorama of the New Jersey Zinc Company's West Plant at Palmerton, Pa.

Vulcan Iron Works. Records, 1884-1948.

Title: Records, 1884-1948.

The records cover the peak period of Vulcan's production from 1905 to 1930, with slight coverage before and after. Locomotive order books (1903-1948) give customer name, shipping date and cylinder and driver dimensions with construction notes and occasional sketches of cylinders and other details. Locomotive specification cards (1902-1920) give full specification, customer and shipping data. Both are arranged by locomotive builder's number. The drawings (1892-1942) depict a wide range of the company's products and their component parts and are arragned according to product type. An incomplete selection of trade catalogs is also included. Additional items may be found in the library's general trade catalog collection. Series V-VII are photographic prints and negatives which are serviced by the Pictorial Collections Department. About half are standard builder's photos of locomotives, but they also include shots of shop interiors, employees at work, and locomotives and equipment installed and in service, particularly at collieries in the anthracite fields. There are also 1,658 negatives of drawings and plans, chiefly of mining equipment. The collection contains many gaps where the original negatives are missing or have deteriorated beyond use. (Many were on nitrate film.) An index to purchasers of the products is available in the Pictorial Collection Dept.

Most of the originals were single sheets, approximately 21" x 26" containing a site plan and axonometric drawing with materials denoted by a watercolor wash. The sheets also contain a printed synopsis of the plant and available fire protection systems. The majority of the plants are textile factories, and more than half are located in New England. Of the remainder, most are in the Middle Atlantic States, with decreasing numbers in the Midwest and Southeast. Important non-textile plants include the Boeing Aircraft Company at Seattle, the Glenn L. Martin plant at Baltimore, the rubber factories of Akron, the Buick plants at Jackson and Flint, the General Electric plant at Toledo, the Cleveland Railway Company shops, the Ford Motor Company at Louisville, and the tobacco factories of Virginia and North Carolina.

The collection contains administrative records, correspondence, financial records, legal documents, maps, notes, publications, preliminary sketches, blueprints, and microfilm from the Seymour Manufacturing Company and the Seymour Specialty Wire Company. The Seymour Manufacturing Company, later renamed the Seymour Specialty Wire Company, produced brass products at several mills along the Naugatuck River for over one hundred years, before closing in 1991.

Thorvald Hammer was born in 1893. He was a leading industrialist and engineer in the state of Connecticut for over fifty years. He graduated from Yale University in 1918 and went on to serve in the U.S. Navy during the First World War. Thorvald Hammer became the president of the Malleable Iron Fittings Company (MIF) in 1935. An accomplished engineer, Mr. Hammer contributed to the development of the galvanizing process and was the holder of several original patents. After resigning from the presidency, Mr. Hammer assumed the position of Chairman of the Board. He died in 1987 at the age of 93.
